Connecticut Defenders News Release
One day after top Mets prospect Kevin Mulvey dazzled in his best outing of the season, Marcos Carvajal looked to match his teammate's effort with a sparkling start of his own. The right-handed pitcher was strong on the mound and received some early offense from the bats to help lift the Mets to a 3-1 victory.
The Mets bats hit Defenders starter Garrett Broshuis early in the game, putting up two runs in the top of the first inning. OF Corey Coles led off the game with a single to center field and out later 3B Mark Kiger collected a single of his own after an 11 pitch battle. That put runners at first and second for 1B Mike Carp who doubled, scoring both Coles and Kiger, to put the Mets up 2-0.
Carvajal worked quickly and effectively early on and faced the minimum number of batters through his first three frames. The Defenders finally tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but it was a defensive mishap and not a Carvajal mistake that led to the score. SS Jake Wald collected a single with 1 out and stole second base. The following batter 1B Tyler Von Schell lifted an 0-1 pitch to left field but OF Brett Harper dropped the ball, allowing Wald to score to cut the Mets lead to 2-1. 2B Mark Minicozzi stepped to the plate and delivered a single in the hold between first and second, Machemer waved home Von Schell and RF Caleb Stewart fired a bullet to the plate to cut down the tying run and end the inning. The Defenders never got closer as they entered the fifth inning trailing 2-1.
After the rough first frame, Garrett Broshuis settled down nicely and went on to put forth a very solid outing, exiting the game after seven full innings with just 2 runs allowed. But in the eighth inning Joe Bateman came in on relief, walked the first batter in Coles and later gave up an RBI single to Carp, as the Mets extended their lead to two runs. Lina Urdaneta came on in the ninth inning and retired 3 of 4 batters he faced to chop down the Defenders and complete the win for the Mets 3-1.
Garrett Broshuis (L, 2-10) absorbed the loss despite another solid outing, tossing 7 innings, 2 runs, 7 hits and striking out 5 batters, without surrendering a walk. Marcos Carvajal (W, 4-6) earned his fourth win of the season after an impressive outing, turning in 7 innings, allowing just 1 unearned run, scattering 4 hits, walking 1 and striking out a batter. Lina Urdaneta (S, 1) picked up his first save of the season after a solid ninth inning, without surrendering a hit and striking out a batter. The Defenders were limited to just four hits between Carvajal and Urdaneta. Simon Klink went 1 for 2 in the game with a walk in the loss. The Mets took 3 of 4 games in the series. The Defenders travel to New Britain for a 3 game set beginning on Monday at 7:05 p.m.
