Orenduff, Raglani Lead Suns to Independence Day Victory

Zebulon, N.C. - Justin Orenduff struck out a season-high nine hitters while scattering four hits in six innings as Anthony Raglani had his second two-homerun game in three days leading the Jacksonville Suns (54-33, 13-4) to a 5-2 Independence Day victory over the Carolina Mudcats (35-52, 7-10) in front of 8,381 at Five County Stadium.

The Suns remain in control of first place in the second half South Division race with the Wednesday victory. Jacksonville now leads the season series against Carolina 14-3, with 30 games scheduled. The Suns have won their last eight against the Mudcats.

Jacksonville opened the scoring on Carolina starter Gaby Hernandez in the second inning, when Anthony Raglani hit a one-out, tape measure homerun out to right field, his 13th of the season, opening a 1-0 lead. Carolina came back against Suns starter Justin Orenduff in the bottom of the second inning when Grant Psomas drove home Lee Mitchell on a fielder's choice to tie the game 1-1.

The Suns jumped on the board again in the fifth inning. Xavier Paul singled with two out and later moved to second on a passed ball and third base on a wild pitch. Chin-Lung Hu next singled Paul home to open a 2-1 lead. Jacksonville's Alberto Concepcion led off the sixth inning with a first pitch homerun, his eighth of the year, extending the Suns lead to 3-1.

Jacksonville's Kevin Howard came through in the seventh inning against Hernandez with a two-out double to score Juan Gonzalez for a 4-1 lead. In the eighth inning, Anthony Raglani hit a two-out, solo homerun, his 14th of the season, off of Carolina reliever Matt Yourkin opening a 5-1 lead.

Carolina's Lee Mitchell hit his 16th homerun of the season as he led off the ninth inning against Suns reliever Jon Meloan to end the scoring at 5-2.

Suns starter Justin Orenduff (5-2) struck out nine Mudcats while allowing one run on four scattered hits in six innings for his fourth consecutive win. Mudcats starter Gaby Hernandez (4-8) allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits in seven innings for his eighth loss.

The Suns and Mudcats meet in game two of the series scheduled for four games Thursday at 7:15 p.m. at Five County Stadium. Suns RH Alvis Ojeda will start in the spot of the rotation left vacant with the promotion of Eric Cyr to Triple-A. The Mudcats will send RH Jimmy Serrano out against Jacksonville.
