Mayberry, Duran power 'Riders past Cardinals

The Frisco offense used 14 hits, including six extra base hits, to defeat the Cardinals 8-3 Monday night and win two of three in the series. Edinson Volquez (7-0) earned his second career victory at Dr Pepper Ballpark and remains undefeated on the season. John Mayberry and German Duran each hit two run home runs with two outs to lead the offensive attack.

The ‘Riders got on the board in the first inning when after an Anthony Webster lead-off single, Duran hit an RBI double to center. In the following inning, Frisco made it 2-0 when Mayberry led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on a wild pitch by Cory Rauschenberger. Springfield answered with three runs in the third with an RBI double by Mark Shorey followed by a two run homer by Jarrett Hoffpauir to make the score 3-2. The ‘Riders retook the lead at 4-3 with doubles by Casey Benjamin, Steve Murphy, and Brandon Boggs. Mayberry pushed the lead to 6-3 with his second homer in as many nights and fourth of the year over the left field wall. Duran added two insurance runs in the eighth with his team-best 16th home run of the season.

Volquez went five innings allowing three runs on five hits. He walked three, but struck out seven. The Frisco bullpen shutout Springfield through four innings and didn't surrender a hit. Danny Herrera and Jesse Ingram each threw two innings while Ingram recorded his 17th save on the season, which is good for third in the Texas League. Rauschenberger (6-5) lasted only 2 2/3 innings allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out two.

The first six hitters in the Frisco line up had multi-hit games including Mayberry who went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Duran led the team with three RBI giving him a team-best 50 on the season. The ‘Riders also stole three bases on the night including Webster's league leading 17th of the season.

The RoughRiders will enjoy an off day on Tuesday and then travel to Arkansas to resume a previous game from June 29 with the ‘Riders and the Travelers scoreless in the tenth inning and Frisco coming to bat. The game will begin at 5 p.m. followed by the regular scheduled Independence Day game.
