State College Spikes News Release
The State College Spikes (5-5) beat the Jamestown Jammers by the count of 10-5 on Thursday night to push their winning streak to three games. In those three games the Spikes have scored 26 runs and pounded out 49 hits. Tonight, it was Matt Cavagnaro who led the charge for the Spikes, going 4-for-6 with a home run and three RBI.
State College took control of the game early, scoring twice in the first inning off of Jammers starter Chris Ingoglia (0-2). Matt Cavagnaro and Smelin Perez started the frame with back-to-back singles before Justin Byler followed suit with a single of his own, to score a run and put runners on the corners. After Miles Durham walked to load the bases, the second run came home on a groundball double-play to make the score 2-0.
An inning later the lead would double after Austin McClune's RBI triple scored the first run of the inning before Cavagnaro plated McClune to make the score 4-0. Jamestown would quickly respond, scoring twice in the bottom of the inning on a Ben Lasater home run, but Spikes starter Dionis Rodriguez was able to limit the damage and get out of the inning with a 4-2 advantage.
The Spikes offensive onslaught continued in the next three innings, as the Spikes scored in each of the first five innings. In the third, it was Marcus Davis' solo blast that pushed the score to 5-2. An inning later it was Cavagnaro who once again provided the timely hitting, as his RBI double scored McClune to give the Spikes their second four run lead of the game. In the fifth, Nick Stillwagon joined in on the total team effort, driving home two with a clutch RBI double to make the score 8-2 in favor of State College.
The Jammers mounted a threat in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with only one out before reliever Taylor Cameron (1-0) induced a double-play to end the threat. The Jammers were finally able to cut into the lead in the seventh, scoring twice but Cameron was once again able to wiggle out of trouble and limit the damage.
The Spikes tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the ninth, including a solo-home run from Cavagnaro for the former Penn Stater's first professional home run, to make the final score 10-4. Jamestown added a solo home run in the ninth to make the final score 10-5
The Spikes will look to keep swinging their hot bats when they take on the Jammers tomorrow in the middle game of three. RHP Brandon William (0-1) will make the start for State College. After Saturday's series finale, the Spikes will return to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Sunday to open a three game series against the Batavia Muckdogs. Great seats are still available and they can be purchased over the phone by calling 877-99-SPIKES, logging on to StateCollegeSpikes.com, or by visiting the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park box office.
