Three Big Flies Lift Clippers Past Indians
June 27, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Left fielder Michael Restovich, second baseman Brent Abernathy and first baseman Larry Broadway blasted home runs to help Columbus post a 7-5 victory over Indianapolis in front of 6,408 Wednesday night at Cooper Stadium.
The Clippers improve to 36-43 on the season and 19-23 at home, while the Indians fall to 44-34 overall and 20-20 on the road. Toledo now leads the International League's West Division by three games over the Tribe.
Restovich put Columbus on the board with his 11th roundtripper of the season -- a two-run job to left -- in the first. Abernathy added to the advantage with his first dinger of the campaign -- a solo blast to left -- in the third, while Broadway padded the cushion with his sixth long ball of the year -- a solo shot to right -- in the sixth.
Indianapolis knotted the affair at four apiece with two runs in the seventh. CF Matt Kata drew a lead-off walk, stole second and came plateward on 3B Jose Hernandez's double to right. 1B Brad Eldred, who also reached on a free pass, scored moments later on a fielding error by the Columbus second baseman.
The Clippers answered the call with one run in the seventh and two scores in the eighth. SS Manny Alexander trotted home on a miscue in the seventh, while PH Brandon Watson roped an RBI single and eventually scored in the eighth.
The Tribe attempted to rally in the ninth, but Columbus RHP Chris Booker (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 SO) escaped a jam for his league-leading 21st save.
Clippers RHP Edward Valdez (1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 SO) earned the win, improving to 2-4 on the season. Indians RHP Brian Rogers (0.1 IP, 1 R, 2 BB) was pinned with the loss in his first decision of 2007.
Neither starter -- Columbus LHP John Lannan (6.0 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) or Indianapolis LHP Michael Tejera (6.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO) -- figured in the decision.
Restovich and Abernathy collected two base knocks apiece for the Clippers, while 2B Luis Ordaz led the Indians with a 3-for-4 effort.
The IL West Division rivals continue their four-game series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. LHP Sean Burnett is slated to start for Indianapolis, while RHP Tim Redding is expected to get the nod for Columbus.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
