June 27, 2007 - Southern League (SL1)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

Jacksonville, FLA - The Southern League released the South Division roster for the upcoming Southern League All-Star Game in Pearl, Mississippi, with four Jacksonville Suns picked to make the trip to Trustmark Park.

The 2007 Southern League All-Star Game will be held on Monday, July 9 at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Mississippi, the home of the Mississippi Braves. The game will feature a wealth of top prospects and future major league talent and will pit the South Division against the North Division.

With four selections, the Suns are well-represented on the South Division squad and will be joined by players from the Birmingham Barons, Mississippi Braves, Mobile BayBears and Montgomery Biscuits. The First-Half Champion Braves set the division standard with seven selections to the South Division team.

Leading the way for the Suns are pitchers Eric Cyr and Jon Meloan. Cyr is currently among the league leaders in wins and ERA and has proven to be the most reliable starter on the Suns pitching staff this season. Cyr has seen brief action for the Padres at the Major League level in 2002.

Meloan is one of the highest-rated prospects on the Suns pitching staff. The 2005 fifth-round draft choice was ranked by Baseball America as the seventh-best prospect in the Dodgers organization and has emerged as the Suns' primary closer this season. Meloan has been among the league leaders in saves consistently this year. Two position players for the Suns were named to utility spots on the Southern Division's All-Star roster. Outfielder Xavier Paul will patrol the Trustmark Park outfield on Monday. Paul is in his first season with the Suns after a strong 2006 performance at Vero Beach. Paul has played in all but one game for the Suns this season and currently leads the team in stolen bases.

Juan Gonzalez was also named to the All-Star squad as a utility infielder. Gonzalez, a minor league journeyman, has been a strong addition to highly-touted prospect Chin-Lung Hu in the middle infield and is also among the team leaders in batting average and fielding percentage.

Two other Suns were named to the team, but will be unable to participate. Shortstop Hu was named as the South Division's starting shortstop, but will be unable to participate due to his selection to the All-Star Futures game to be held on July 8 in San Francisco. Former Suns third baseman Marshall McDougall was recently promoted to Triple-A Las Vegas, making him unavailable to serve as the selected starting third baseman.

The Suns are currently on a road trip to Birmingham and will return home on Saturday, June 30 to host the Mobile BayBears for four games leading up to Independence Day. Tickets to the Suns' next homestand and all regular season games are available online at www.jaxsuns.com or by calling 904-358-2846.
