Spikes Explode in 6-2 Win
June 26, 2007 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
State College Spikes News Release
The State College Spikes exploded for 14 hits on Tuesday evening en route to a 6-2 victory over the Batavia Muckdogs. Eight of the nine Spikes starters collected at least one hit with Justin Byler pacing the squad with a 2-for-3 evening with two runs scored.
Spikes starter Tony Watson (1-0) tossed six stellar innings, allowing only one run on five hits, but it seemed like the southpaw would be the hard luck loser, as three Muckdog hurlers kept the Spikes scoreless until the top of the seventh. Austin McClune started the rally with his first hit of the young season, and Matt Cavagnaro followed suit with a single of his to put two runners aboard for Smelin Perez. Perez, who entered the game as the Spikes hottest hitter, continued his strong start with a booming two-RBI double down the left field line to give the Spikes their first lead of the game at 2-1. Byler followed with an RBI double of his own and later came around to score on Bobby Spain's RBI single. When all was said and done the Spikes had strung together five straight hits and were ahead by the score of 4-1.
Batavia sliced into the lead in the bottom of the eighth as a throwing error by Spikes catcher Nick Stillwagon allowed a run to score, but Matt Cavagnaro threw out Daniel Descalso at the plate for the third out of the inning and the Spikes stayed in front 4-2.
State College would push their lead back to four runs in the top of the ninth as Marcus Davis had a two-RBI single to make the final score 6-2.
The Spikes will look to take the rubber game of the three game series tomorrow evening at 7:05 pm. RHP Matt Foust (0-1) will make the start for State College looking to secure his first professional win. The Spikes will head to Jamestown for three with the Jammers after wrapping up the series with Batavia, before returning to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Sunday, July 1st. Great tickets are still available for the Spikes next home stand, and they can be purchased over the phone by calling 877-99-SPIKES, logging on to StateCollegeSpikes.com or by visiting Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
