North Carolina FC News Release

The Carolina RailHawks will host Bavarian SC in the 2nd round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on Tuesday, June 26th at 7:30 PM at SAS Soccer Park in Cary. Season ticket holders will use the voucher marked Exhibition game #3 for this match.

Bavarian SC hails from Milwaukee, WI and is a very successful soccer club, having won numerous amateur state titles and four National Amateur Cup titles. Bavarian is currently leading their local league and just recently lost to a former opponent of the RailHawks, as RWB Adria from Chicago beat them 2-1 in the Region II Midwest Open Cup Final. They feature plenty of former professional players including MLS and USL veteran Johnny Torres as well as Scott Dombrowski, older brother of Carolina RailHawks defender Chad.

"It is very exciting," said Bavarian director of soccer operations Tom Zaiss. "Every time we get to play a professional team it is a great opportunity for our players to show their strengths. We will approach the game with no pressure and will try to take home a positive result."

The Carolina RailHawks will try to continue their quest for the US Open Cup with another victory. They are still hot over their 2-0 win over the Charleston Battery on Saturday, June 23rd and will want to add to their streak.

"We will play our very best knowing we will face an MLS team in the next round," said RailHawks head coach Scott Schweitzer. "We can't look past Bavarian and we have to give everything we have in order to reward our fans with an MLS matchup."

Should the RailHawks advance to the next round they will face the US Open Cup champions, the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer on Sunday, July 15th at SAS Soccer Park in Cary.

The U.S. Open Cup is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with the U.S. Soccer and includes teams from the MLS, USL-1, USL-2, PDL and the USASA. It is the oldest annual team tournament in the U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.

The Carolina RailHawks are a United Soccer Leagues expansion team that entered the USL First Division in April 2007. The squad will play 14 regular season home games and four additional home playoff and exhibition games each year, with all home games played at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. Under Rochester Rhinos co-owner and USL Hall of Fame inductee Chris Economides, the RailHawks organization was formed in October 2005 and awarded the USL franchise in January 2006.
