Late Longballs Lift Wizards Over Lugnuts

Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING- A five-run eighth inning was enough to doom the Lansing Lugnuts Sunday afternoon, as the Fort Wayne Wizards took a 6-1 decision in front of 4,214 fans at Oldsmobile Park. The win allowed the Wizards to earn a series split with Lansing
The score was tied 1-1 in the eighth inning when the Lugnuts handed the ball to reliever Po-Hsuan Keng. After retiring the first batter, Keng allowed a triple to Javis Diaz, who scampered home on a wild pitch in the next at-bat to make it 2-1. Then with a man on first, Daryl Jones drilled a two-run homer to left field to extend the advantage to 4-1. Rayner Contreras immediately followed that with a double and was brought home on a Michael Campbell home run to right-center field that pushed the lead to 6-1.
Prior to the eighth, the Lugnuts had done a fine job of keeping the Wizards off of the scoreboard behind the arm of Zach Dials. He made his longest start of the year, throwing seven innings and allowing just one run on four hits. Dials, who began the game by retiring the first nine batters, did not factor into the decision.
;Lansing had taken the lead in the third on a Travis Snider RBI groundout, but Fort Wayne answered right back in the fourth when Diaz cracked a solo homer to right field.
Fort Wayne (33-40, 2-2) used five pitchers in the game, as Stephen Faris (2-4) tossed a scoreless seventh to get the win.
Keng (0-4) took the loss for Lansing, as he surrendered five runs on six hits, all of which came in the eighth.
Lansing (37-36, 2-2) will now hit the road on Monday to begin an eight-game stretch away from home. The first four games of the trip will come against the West Michigan Whitecaps. Nate Starner (5-6, 4.93) will start the series opener for Lansing, while Jonah Nickerson (4-6, 5.80) will hurl for the Whitecaps. First pitch is 7:00 p.m.
