Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons began the first half of the 2007 season in great fashion, winning their first nine games. The second half of the season has been a different story so far, as Dayton is still looking for the first victory since the all-star break. The latest setback came in shutout fashion Sunday afternoon, as West Michigan blanked the Dragons 4-0 in front of an all-time record 9,389 fans at Fifth Third Field.

Dragons starter Anthony Gressick (LP, 2-5) struggled in the top of the first inning. Gressick walked Deik Scram on four pitches and Louis Ott on five pitches. After falling behind 3-1 on Brennan Boesch, Gressick threw a belt-high fastball that was pulled down the right field line for an RBI double. Ryan Strieby followed with a two RBI single to center, and West Michigan led 3-0. Gressick allowed another hit and a walk to load the bases, but got out of the inning without further damage being done.

Gressick settled down after the first inning, allowing just one more hit and one more walk for the rest of his 5.0 innings of work. Unfortunately for Gressick and the Dragons, West Michigan starter Matt O'Brien (WP, 1-0) was on top of his game all afternoon. O'Brien pitched 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing just five hits while striking out three and walking one.

The bullpens for both teams were terrific as well. Terrell Young (ND) threw 2.0 scoreless innings in the 6th and the 7th, and Lee Tabor (ND) allowed just one run in his two innings on a sacrifice fly by Ott in the top of the ninth. West Michigan's bullpen was just as good as Casey Fein (SV, 4) got the final six outs for the Whitecaps.

The Dragons head out on the road Monday to open up an eight game road trip against South Bend and Fort Wayne. The Dragons open up the four game series against the Silver Hawks with a 7 PM first pitch Monday night. RHP Rafael Gonzalez (9-1, 2.04 ERA) will start for the Dragons while South Bend counters with RHP Tony Barnette (4-5, 3.47 ERA). 1410 ESPN Radio will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 6:30 PM. All Dragons games are also streamed live on the internet via All-In Broadcasting at www.daytondragons.com.
