West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
DAYTON, OH - Matt O'Brien made a spectacular return to the Whitecaps with seven scoreless innings pitched as he combined with Casey Fien on the third West Michigan shutout of the season, a 4-0 win at Dayton. The victory is the sixth in a row for the Whitecaps, who completed a four game sweep of the Dragons.
In the first inning, the Whitecaps took advantage of three walks issued by Dayton starter Anthony Gressick. West Michigan batted around and scored three times.
The first run came home on a double by Brennan Boesch. Ryan Strieby followed with a two-run single to put the Caps ahead 3-0 before an out was recorded in the game.
Scott Sizemore went 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of double and scored the other West Michigan run on a sacrifice fly by Louis Ott in the top of the ninth.
OBrien allowed five hits in seven innings, walked one, hit one batter and struck out three. He opened the season with Lakeland of the Florida State League.
Fien did not allow a base runner over the final two innings and struck out two to earn his fourth save.
It was the third four game sweep of the season for the Whitecaps. Dayton had not been swept in a four game series since West Michigan took four straight at Fifth Third Field September 1-4 in the final series of the regular season last year.
9,389 was the paid attendance and the largest in the eight year history of Fifth Third Field. The previous record was 9,361 established exactly three years ago on June 24, 2004 for a game against Lansing.
Pitcher's Note: Prior to Saturday night when Ed Clelland grounded back to the Dayton pitcher to end the top half of the twelfth inning, the last Whitecaps batter to record a plate appearance with Jamie Detillion in 2001. Detillion is currently an assistant coach for the Grand Valley State University baseball team.
