Silverbacks Play Live On FSC

June 21, 2007 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Atlanta Silverbacks News Release

In their second live national broadcast on the Fox Soccer Channel this season, the Atlanta Silverbacks will travel to take on the Charleston Battery this Friday night (6.22.07) at 8:00 pm. Friday night's meeting will be the second between the two teams in the 2007 season - their first match ended in a 2-0 win for the Battery on May 26. The Atlanta-Charleston rivalry has been played out in 32 matches over the course of the years; Charleston leads the series with 15 wins to Atlanta's 12 (the teams have tied five times). The Silverbacks will return to play at RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium on Tuesday, June 26 in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Silverbacks will host the USL Second Division's Charlotte Eagles at 7:55 pm. The winner of the match will advance to play FC Dallas of the MLS on July 10 at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas.

The Silverbacks have released the Rios Captain's Pass - a special ticket offer that includes a ticket to see the Silverbacks' four biggest remaining home games: June 26, July 4, August 10, and September 1, for just $40. The Captain's Pass provides a $20 discount off the regular gate ticket price. Call 404-969-4906 for more information.

SILVERBACKS WOMEN LOOK TO REMAIN UNDEFEATED AT HOME AND IN FIRST PLACE OF ATLANTIC DIVISION

When the Atlanta Silverbacks Women lost 3-0 to the Charlotte Lady Eagles in the W-League season opener, the future of their third season was unknown. But since their match with the Lady Eagles, the Silverbacks Women have not lost a game. The Silverbacks, now 5-1-0 and leading the Atlantic Division, will host the Hampton Roads Piranhas this Friday, June 22 at RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium. The Silverbacks already beat the Piranhas once this season on May 26 when Sarah Steinmann scored two goals in the 'Backs 3-0 win. Atlanta will continue to be without Steinmann in Friday night's match; she is out with a minor knee injury.

The Silverbacks are coming off a nail-biting match against the Bradenton Athletics last Friday. Atlanta outshot the Athletics 17-2 but did not get a goal into the net until stoppage time when Krista Davey sent a corner in to Christine Latham who headed in the game-winning goal. Rebecca Hall, a newcomer to the Silverbacks this season, received W-League Team of the Week honors for her defensive efforts in the 'Backs shutout for the second week in a row.

SILVERBACKS U23's RETURN TO RE/MAX GREATER ATLANTA STADIUM; WILLIE B. CUP PLAY CONTINUES

The Atlanta Silverbacks U23's will host the Nashville Metros on Friday night at 5:15 pm in the second match of the 2007 competition for the Willie B. Cup, a trophy awarded to the annual winner of the season series between the two United Soccer Leagues rivals.

The trophy is named in honor of beloved Zoo Atlanta silverback gorilla Willie B., who died in 2000 when the Cup series was inaugurated. Willie B. is still remembered fondly at the zoo, where his children and baby grandchildren are still among the most popular attractions.

The Silverbacks won the inaugural Willie B. Cup in 2000 when both teams competed in USL's First Division. The Metros won it in 2001, when they made their last First Division playoff appearance. Although the Metros left the professional ranks for the USL's Premier Development League in 2002, Nashville retained the Cup that year by virtue of a 1-1 draw in a pre-season exhibition match between the teams.

Atlanta and Nashville renewed the cup last season when the Silverbacks launched a franchise in the USL's Premier Development League. The Silverbacks U23's won last year's competition. The two teams will meet four times this season; they have already met once in a match in Nashville that ended in a 1-1 tie.

The winner of the Cup will be determined by total points accumulated in the four-game series (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw). In case of a tie, the Cup will be determined by goal differential in the four matches. If the series is still tied, the team in possession of the Cup (the Silverbacks U23's) will retain it for another year.

The U23's will play again on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm against the Baton Rouge Capitals at RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium.

Tickets to see the Atlanta Silverbacks U23's can be purchased at the stadium ticket office on the day of the game. For more information call 404-969-4900.
