Durham Bulls News Release

Durham, NC - Chris Richard's first inning grand slam and Joel Guzman's sixth inning, tie-breaking solo home run in the sixth inning were enough for the Bulls as they defeated the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, 8-4 on Tuesday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Guzman's home run came with one out in the sixth inning off of RHP Steven Jackson (4-8). Jackson pitched the fifth and sixth innings, giving up three hits including the home run and two walks with one strikeout.

Yankees' RHP Colter Bean loaded the bases with one out in the first inning and Richard delivered with his team-leading eleventh home run to give the Bulls an early 4-0 lead. Bean managed to keep the Bulls' bats silent after the first, as he allowed just one more hit, but he left after the fourth inning, giving up the four runs (three earned) and four hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

The Yankees were able to chip away at the Bulls' lead though as Kevin Reese followed Juan Francia's double with a triple to score the team's first run in the third inning. Angel Chavez and Francia both hit RBI singles in the fourth inning, and then Bronson Sardinha hit an RBI single in the fifth inning to tie the game at four. Bulls' RHP Jeff Niemann (7-4) battled back though in his final inning of work, as he pitched a scoreless sixth inning to halt the Yankees scoring run. He gave up four runs, eight hits, and two walks while striking out three on the night.

The Bulls added three insurance in the seventh as Joel Guzman picked up his second RBI with a single and Dustan Mohr tallied two RBIs on a base hit.

The Bulls and Yankees will meet again on Wednesday afternoon at 1 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. For tickets, go to www.durhambulls.com or call the box office at (919) 956-BULL.
