Tennessee Smokies News Release
Sevierville, TN - After taking the first two games of the series against the visiting West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx, the Tennessee Smokies dropped game three in rough fashion 4-2 on Friday night in front of 4,946 eager fans. The loss dropped the Smokies to 35-31 on the season, and waiting on the results of game two between the Huntsville Stars and Birmingham Barons to see where they stand in the North Division. With the Stars losing game one, the Smokies still stood within ½ game of first place with two to play in the first half.
West Tennessee got to Smokies starting pitcher Mark Holliman (6-5) in the top of the third inning. After Sebastian Boucher bunted his way on base, Charlton Jimerson crushed a triple into the right field gap to bring him home. Prentice Redman followed with a single to score Jimerson, and the Smokies were suddenly down 2-0.
The Smokies certainly had their chances in the evening, but just could not bring in the runs tonight. They stranded nine runners through the first eight innings, including the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. What really cost the Smokies tonight were errors. Tennessee committed four team errors in the contest, one of which led to a run in the 6th inning for West Tennessee to stake them to a 3-0 lead.
With the score 4-0 in the bottom of the eighth, Tennessee finally made their move. Josh Kroeger walked to open the inning, which brought up Matt Craig. Craig deposited his fifth home run of the season to pull the Smokies to within two runs. The Smokies would get no closer however, as the West Tennessee bullpen retired the next six batters in order to end the game.
Robert Rohrbaugh (7-4) picked up the win for the Diamond Jaxx, with David Asher notching his first save with West Tennessee. Holliman took the loss for the Smokies, but still pitched six innings, giving up three runs while striking out two.
The Smokies play game four of this pivotal five game series with West Tennessee on
Saturday night beginning at 7:15 pm. Left-hander Donnie Veal (3-4, 6.00) will take the hill for the Smokies to face Diamond Jaxx right-hander Joseph Woerman (2-3, 3.34).
