Early Runs Carry 'Riders Past Hooks

June 13, 2007 - Texas League (TL1)
Frisco RoughRiders News Release

The RoughRiders scored six times off of Hooks' starter Jimmy Barthmaier (2-3) in the first two innings and held off a Hooks' comeback attempt with a 6-4 victory Wednesday night at Whataburger Field.

The first four batters of the game all reached base for Frisco as Anthony Webster led off with a double and was followed by a Casey Benjamin walk, a German Duran RBI double and a two run single by Steve Murphy. Brandon Boggs doubled just two batters later to score Murphy giving the 'Riders an early 4-0 advantage. Frisco quickly went back to work in the second inning when Webster led off with a single and stole second and third base. Webster now has a team-high 13 stolen bases on the season. Murphy delivered again with a two run single scoring Webster and Benjamin, who walked earlier in the inning.

Edinson Volquez (5-0) shut down the Hooks' offense for four innings before he surrendered a two-run home run to Neil Sellers in the fifth. Volquez found himself in trouble once again in the seventh inning when the Hooks scored two more times to close the gap to 6-4. Volquez worked 6 1/3 innings allowing the four runs on five hits while striking out four and walking none. Kea Kometani relieved Volquez and retired the final seven batters he faced to earn his third save of the year.

Duran led the 'Riders offense attack with three hits and Murphy drove in a game-high four runs. JR Towles and Edwin Maysonet each had two hits for Corpus Christi.

The series continues tomorrow night as Eric Hurley (6-1, 2.63) faces the Hooks' Ronnie Martinez (3-5, 4.62) at 7 p.m. at Whataburger Field.
