Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Steve Murphy drove in four runs in his first two plate appearances and the Frisco RoughRiders made a six-run, second-inning lead stick to knock off the Hooks 6-4 Wednesday night before 6,711 at Whataburger Field.

Corpus Christi fell to 29-36 in the first half and had its win streak snapped at four. Frisco stands 43-21.

Frisco roughed up Hooks starter Jimmy Barthmaier for four runs in the opening frame. The first five RoughRiders reached base. Murphy had a two-run single sandwiched between RBI doubles by German Duran and Brandon Boggs.

In the second, Anthony Webster grounded a one-out single through the middle and Casey Benjamin walked. After a double steal, Murphy lined a single to center, scoring both runners for a 6-0 lead.

Corpus Christi touched starter Edinson Volquez for two runs in the fifth. J.R. Towles led off the frame with a single and Neil Sellers hammered a first-pitch curveball that hit the top of the left-field fence for a home run, cutting Frisco's lead to four.

In the meantime, Barthmaier (2-3) recovered nicely with five shutout innings until his exit after seven. The right-hander threw 112 pitches, yielded nine hits and two walks and struck out four. Reliever Jeff Wigdahl pitched two scoreless innings.

The Hooks knocked Volquez out of the game in the seventh. Ray Sadler was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Towles drilled a double into the left field gap. Two outs later, Edwin Maysonet chopped a single into center field to pull Corpus Christi within two.

Volquez (5-0) gave up four runs off five hits and struck out four without walking a batter. Kea Kometani earned his third save with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The teams meet in Game 2 of a four-game series Thursday with Corpus Christi's Ronnie Martinez (3-5) squaring off against Eric Hurley (6-1).
