Chiefs Drop Fourth Straight

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs fell for the fourth straight game as the visiting Burlington Bees picked up a 6-3 win on Wednesday evening at O'Brien Field. The Chiefs are now 30-35 on the season and cannot finish the first half with a .500 record or better.

Matt Camp led off the game with a single off the glove of Bees pitcher Matt Campbell and moved to third on a single by Josh Lansford. With Lansford running at first, Campbell stepped off to attempt a pick him off and Camp broke for the plate and slid under the tag of the catcher Matt Morizio to make it 1-0.

The Bees answered back in the top of the second when Michael Thompson connected on a solo home run to left off Chiefs starter Jake Renshaw to tie the game at 1-1. The home run was just the sixth allowed by Renshaw in his 13th appearances.

The Chiefs defense gave Burlington the lead for the first time on the night in third inning. After a one out walk to Kurt Mertins, Jeff Bianchi moved the runner to third on a single down the left field line. Renshaw got Brady Everett to fly out to Yusuf Carter in right and Carter fired the ball to the plate on a line and caught Mertins off the bag at third. However, while in the run down, Chiefs catcher Wellington Castillo threw the ball past the third basemen and it allowed Mertins to score to make it 2-1.

Burlington picked up back-to-back one out singles by Morizio and Jase Turner in the fourth inning. Morizio scored on an infield single by Derrick Robinson and Turner scored after an error by the second basemen Ryne Malone to make it 4-1. Bianchi came to plate with two outs and two runners in scoring position and doubled into the left field corner to give the Bees a four run inning and a 6-1 advantage.

The Chiefs added a run in the bottom half of the inning after Josh Lansford doubled to right center field and moved to third on a groundout by Russ Canzler. Ryan Norwood grounded out to first to score Lansford from third and cut into the deficit at 6-2.

Peoria continued to try and climb back in the game in the fifth inning after Jonathon Mota reached on a fielder's choice, Matt Camp had a nine pitch at bat against Campbell before eventually doubling down the left field line to score Mota all the way from first base and make it 6-3. With the tying run at the plate, Lansford grounded into an inning ending 6-4-3 double play to end the rally. The Chiefs never threatened against the Bees bullpen after the fifth inning.

Renshaw suffered his second straight loss of the season allowing six runs, five of which were earned in four innings of work while striking out two and walking one. Relievers Brad Clipp and Matt Maradeo did not allow a run on two hits in four innings of work. Matt Campbell worked 4 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits but did not factor in the decision. Aaron Hartsock worked three innings of work out of the bullpen to get the win. Chris Hayes worked the final 1 2/3 to earn the save.

Gorman's Pub Player of the Game Matt Camp (CF)- Camp went three for four with a double and an RBI. He also stole home in Wednesday's contest which was the first time the Chiefs stole home since April 10th 2006.

Notes... The Chiefs have hit into 15 double plays in the last 13 games...Thursday is a throwback Thursday with the Chiefs wearing throwback uniforms to celebrate the 25th anniversary season... It is also Taco Bell Thursday if the Chiefs score four or more runs during the game all fans can redeem their ticket stub for a free taco at all participating central Illinois Taco Bell restaurants...
