Another Big Lead Blown by Whitecaps

FORT WAYNE, IN - For the second time in six days, the Whitecaps surrendered a 5-0 lead and lost to Fort Wayne, 7-6 in ten innings. Despite the loss, West Michigan's magic number to clinch a playoff berth in the first half was reduced to three because Lansing was beaten by Great Lakes, 7-3.

The Whitecaps have lost five games in a row for the first time since May 19-23, 2005.

West Michigan is 7-2 against the Wizards this season. The only other loss was on May 26 when the Whitecaps blew a 6-0 lead and lost 8-7.

James Skelton highlighted the Whitecaps offensive attack by going 4-for-5 with two RBI and his third home run of the season.

Closer Brett Jensen blew a save opportunity for the Whitecaps for just the second time this season in 14 opportunities. He allowed two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a two out single by Cedric Hunter. Jensen also allowed the game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the tenth off the bat of Jeremy Hunt.

The winning run was scored by Daryl Jones, who went 4-for-5 with a home run and three runs scored. Hunt was 2-for-5 and blasted a two run homer in the sixth inning.

Santo De Leon went deep for the Whitecaps in the second inning. Deik Scram was 2-for-5 for West Michigan with a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.

In Dayton last Friday, the Whitecaps surrendered a 5-0 lead and lost to the Dragons, 8-6.

Snapping the Slide: West Michigan will try to end its season-long five game losing streak during the final game of the series Thursday in Fort Wayne. LHP Chris Cody (5-4, 1.72) will be on the mound for the Whitecaps against RHP Stevie Delabar (0-0, 7.56).
