Swing Drop Second In A Row To Wisconsin

June 13, 2007 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities saw their playoff hopes all but disappear on Wednesday afternoon at John O'Donnell Stadium, dropping their second game in a row to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers by a score of 5-2. With just four games remaining in the first half of the season, the Swing need to win out while Clinton loses out in order to have a chance at post-season play.

Quad Cities (36-29) got a strong performance by Wilmer Alvarado, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI, gunning down four would-be basestealers in his first start of the season behind the plate. Wisconsin (19-45) limited the rest of the team to just two hits, however, leading the contest from start to finish.

The Timber Rattlers got on the board in a hurry Wednesday afternoon, taking advantage of some first inning wildness from Elvis Hernandez. The Swing right-hander walked two batters and hit another in the inning. He then fell behind Carlos Pegeuro with two men aboard, eventually giving up a three-run homer to the designated hitter to give Wisconsin the early 3-0 lead.

The first Swing run of the ballgame came in the bottom of the second. Luke Gorsett led off the frame with his 17th double of the season, and one batter later Alvarado drove him home with one of his three hits on the afternoon.

Quad Cities trailed 3-1 until the top of the ninth, when the Timber Rattlers added to their advantage. Trevor Lawhorn and Reed Eastley each singled to open the inning. With one away a wild pitch brought Lawhorn home, and Alex Liddi followed with a run-scoring single to stretch the advantage to 5-1.

The Swing tallied another run in the bottom of the ninth after a one-out walk to Gorsett chased reliever Ricky Orta from the contest. Alvarado greeted the new pitcher with an RBI-double to make it a 5-2 game, but that was as close as Quad Cities would get.

Kyle Parker (3-3) earned the win for Wisconsin, holding the Swing to just one run on three hits over six strong innings. He struck out five and walked three, maintaining his ERA at a slim 1.50 through nine outings this season.

Hernandez (4-4) took the loss after a shaky first inning, though he settled down over his next two frames. He pitched three innings in all, allowing three runs on two hits while fanning four, issuing three walks, hitting a batter, and uncorking one wild pitch.

Tandem starter P.J. Walters retired the first nine batters he faced out of the bullpen before running into trouble in the top of the ninth. He struck out five without issuing a walk, allowing two runs - one earned - on three hits in 3.1 innings of work.
