Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING- Three first inning runs propelled the Dayton Dragons, as they walloped the Lansing Lugnuts by a score of 10-6 before 1,406 fans at Oldsmobile Park Tuesday night. The win cut the Dragons magic number to two games to clinch the division title in the first half.
Dayton jumped on top of Lansing early, when Drew Stubbs and Justin Turner each singled to start the game. Chris Valaika's sacrifice fly plated Stubbs to make it 1-0. Chris Heisey followed that later in the inning with a two-run blast over the left field wall to extend the advantage to 3-0.
After putting another run across in the second, the Dragons were able to explode for six runs in the seventh to put the game away. Eddy Rodriguez's bases loaded single scored two runs to push the lead to 6-0. Gerardo Cabrera and Stubbs would follow that with RBI singles of their own to make it 8-0 before Justin Turner ended the barrage with a two-run double to put the Dragons ahead 10-0.
Lansing rallied in the eighth with a six run inning of its own, highlighted by a two-run Yuber Rodriguez single and a Sean Shoffit RBI double. The runs ended a 16 inning scoreless streak for the Lugnuts.
Sean Watson (5-2) got the win for the Dragons, tossing six innings and allowing just three hits. He struck out nine batters, including one stretch where he fanned six straight.
Nate Starner (5-6) took the loss for Lansing, as he lasted 5 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits.
Lansing (32-30) remains 2 1/2 games behind West Michigan for second place in the Eastern Division. The Lugnuts will now head to Dow Diamond to begin a seven game, five day road trip. The first two will take place against the Great Lakes Loons on Wednesday night, as Lansing's Graham Godfrey (3-1, 4.31) takes the hill to face the Loons' Clayton Kershaw (6-2, 2.13). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
