Peoria Chiefs News Release

Burlington, IA - The Peoria Chiefs left eight runners on base and fell 3-2 to the Burlington Bees in their final road game of the first half Tuesday night. Starter Jose Pina is now 1-7 and Ryne Malone's 12 game hit streak came to and end for the Chiefs who fall to 30-34 on the half. For the second night in a row, Matt Camp led off the Chiefs first with a double to left. Bees' starter Everett Teaford rallied to retire the next three Peoria hitters and leave Camp at third base.

After going in order in the first, Burlington jumped on Chiefs starter Jose Pina for the lead in the bottom of the second. Brady Everett led off with a single to left and Michael Thompson followed with a double. After a groundout, Jase Turner put the Bees up 1-0 with a sacrifice fly to center.

Burlington added to their lead with a two-out rally in the third. Pina walked Kurt Mertins on four straight pitches with two outs. After Mertins stole second, Everett drove him home with a single for a 2-0 Bees lead. Thompson followed with a RBI double for the second night in a row as Burlington lead 3-0 at the end of three.

Peoria finally showed signs of life in the seventh. Yusuf Carter led off with a single against Teaford and stole second. Alfred Joseph picked up the Chiefs first hit with runners in scoring position in eight at-bats on the night as Carter scored on the single to cut the lead to 3-1. After a single by Matt Canepa and a failed sac bunt attempt by Jonathon Mota, Camp singled home Joseph to get the Chiefs within one. Reliever Henry Barrera retired Ryne Malone and struck out Josh Lansford as the Chiefs left the tying and go-ahead runs on base.

Russ Canzler led off the eighth with a walk against Jim Wladyka. Wladyka, who entered the game with a 27.00 ERA also walked Ryan Norwood with nobody out. But Carter bounced into a 6-4-3 double play and Joseph grounded to third as the Chiefs again left the tying run in scoring position.

Pina allowed two base runners in the fifth before giving way to reliever Jayson Ruhlman. The Chiefs starter allowed three runs on five hits and a season high five walks. Ruhlman threw 3 1/3 innings and allowed just one hit and two hit batters.

Gorman's Pub Player of the Game Matt Camp (CF) - Camp was 2-for-4 with a double, walk, single, RBI and two stolen bases in the loss. He leads the team and is 3rd in the MWL with 20 steals.
