Bases loaded walk gives Snappers nightcap, 5-4

A bases loaded walk, drawn by Yancarlos Ortiz, in the bottom of the eighth inning, gave the Beloit Snappers a 5-4, come from behind win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in game two of a DH Monday night at Pohlman Field in Beloit.
The Kernels jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after four innings as an RBI double by P.J. Phillips scored Tyler Johnson in the top of the second and RBI singles by Tyler Johnson and Stantrel Smith helped score three more runs in the top of the fourth.
The Snappers chased Kernels starter Doug Brandt in the bottom of the fifth with a walk, two singles and a double to make the score 4-2 Kernels. A two RBI single by Garrett Olson off Kernel reliever Aaron Cook (1-2) tied the game at 4-4 and the Snappers were looking for more but Cook got Wilson Ramos to hit into a 643 double play and Dan Valencia to ground out to Matt Sweeney to end the inning.
Beloit had the bases loaded and no one out in the bottom of the eighth as Warner Madrigal came on to take over for Cook. Madrigal got pinch hitter Johnny Woodard to force Danny Berg out at home, but issued the game-winning walk to Yancarlos Ortiz to end the game.
Beloit reliever Jesus Carnevales (2-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Adam Hawes.
Hank Conger was 2 for 4 with two doubles to lead the Kernel offense in game two as the Snappers outhit the Kernels 12-8.
Beloit improves to 40-23 with the win. The Kernels fall to 36-26 and remain 3-1/2 games behind the Snappers and 2-1/2 games behind Clinton in the MWL Western Division playoff race with seven games remaining in the first half of the season.
The Kernels and Snappers play game three of this six game series Tuesday night at 7 pm as David Herndon (7-2) starts for the Kernels against Jeff Manship (6-1). The game can be heard on-line at www.kernels.com
