Back to back triples by Abel Nieves and Chris Pettit and a sacrifice fly by Mark Trumbo led to two runs in the top of the eighth inning and a 4-2 Kernels victory over the Beloit Snappers in game one of a doubleheader Monday night at Pohlman Field in Beloit.
The Snappers jumped on Kernels starter Trevor Bell (2-2) for two runs in the bottom of the first, but Bell would settle down and hold the Snappers in check the rest of the game. Bell allowed two runs on seven hits over seven innings pitched and struck out five with no walks to get the win. Barret Browning pitched a perfect eighth inning to get his fourth save of the season.
Matt Sweeney was 3 for 3 with a HR and 2 RBI and Chris Pettit was 2 for 4 with a triple and RBI. Mark Trumbo hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth for an RBI and Stantrel Smith was 3 for 3 as the Kernels outhit Beloit 11-7.
Beloit reliever Aaron Craig (1-1) took the loss for the Snappers.
In the nightcap of Monday's DH, Kernel lefty Doug Brandt (3-2) takes the hill against Adam Hawes (4-6) for Beloit.
