Greenville Drive News Release
Kannapolis, NC - Pitchers Daniel Bard and Ryan Phillips combined for something that had yet to be done in the Drive's two year history - a no-hitter - as they defeated the Kannapolis Intimidators 5-0 in a rain-shortened, six inning game.
The closest the Drive had come to the elusive no-no was on May 29th, 2006 when Chris Jones, along with relievers Ismael Casillas and Hunter Jones allowed just one hit over nine innings versus the Augusta GreenJackets.
Bard, a 2006 first-round selection of the Red Sox and former UNC Tar Heels pitcher, tossed five no-hit innings despite walking a season-high six batters. While fanning four batters, Bard (1-1) picked up his first professional victory in seven starts between the Drive and Lancaster JetHawks. Phillips tossed a clean sixth inning in just his second appearance out of the bullpen to continue the string of zeroes.
After both teams failed to plate a run through the first three innings, the Drive broke the scoreless tie with four runs in the fourth off Jake Rasner (3-6). The first three batters reached base for Greenville, including an RBI-single off the bat of Josh Reddick. Jon Still later scored on a failed pickoff attempt before Manny Arambarris blasted a two-run homer to left. It was the third baseman's first long ball of the season.
Despite threatening clouds hovering over Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium, not a drop of rain fell until the seventh inning. Both Reid Engel and Lars Anderson reached base at the start of the frame before the umpires cleared the field. After a 33 minute delay, the crew of Mike Brundage and Matt Arcovio called the game to seal the no-hitter.
The Drive and Intimidators continue their three-game series Tuesday night with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Greenville will put the pill in the hands of southpaw Dustin Richardson to continue their winning ways, and Kannapolis will counter with right-hander Matt Long.
The Drive return home to West End Field on Thursday, June 14th to closeout the first half of the regular season with the Asheville Tourists. Tickets to all Drive home games can be purchased by visiting www.GreenvilleDrive.com, or by calling (864) 240-4500.
