Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

Kannapolis, NC - The Greenville Drive recorded a rain-shortened no-hitter against the Kannapolis Intimidators Monday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The game was called with two men on base and nobody out in the top of the seventh with the Drive leading 5-0. The game goes down as official, with Greenville (25-38) taking the first game of a three-game series against Kannapolis (28-36). With rain in the Kannapolis area for much of the afternoon, the game was delayed by 17 minutes at the start. But, despite threatening clouds, not a drop of rain fell at The Cannon until the top of the seventh. The game was delayed for 33 minutes before the umpiring crew of Mike Brundage and Matt Arcovio called the game.

Daniel Bard, a 2006 first-round pick of the Boston Red Sox and former North Carolina Tar Heel pitcher, got the win for the Drive, lasting five no-hit innings, despite walking six batters. It was Bard?s (1-1) first professional victory in seven starts between High A Lancaster and Greenville. Reliever Ryan Phillips pitched a clean sixth inning in relief.

Jake Rasner (3-5) took the loss for Kannapolis, giving up four runs in the fourth inning on four hits and two Kannapolis errors.

The Intimidators were called out on the basepaths twice during the game. To end the fourth inning, Lee Cruz was tagged out at home by Greenville catcher Jon Still after the pitch got away from Still to his left. In the fifth, Hancer Vargas was thrown out at third to end the inning after he tried to tag on a John Shelby fly ball to center field.

Kannapolis had been no-hit through 7.2 innings by Hickory?s Mike Crotta before they came back to win that game 5-3. Monday, the Intimidators did not get a chance to break-up the no-hitter after the sixth inning.

The two teams will try to complete a full game at The Cannon Tuesday night. Game time is set for 7:05 pm.
