Fresno Ready For First Place Showdown with Sacramento

June 11, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release

Fresno, CA - Fresno Grizzlies outfielder Nate Schierholtz is on his way up to San Francisco after getting his first-ever promotion to the Major Leagues earlier today. To make room for Schierholtz, the Giants sent outfielder Dan Ortmeier back to the Grizzlies.

Schierholtz becomes the fifth player to join the Giants after starting the season on the Grizzlies' opening day roster. Earlier this season, former Grizzlies players Tim Lincecum (SP), Fred Lewis (OF), Dan Ortmeier (OF) and Guillermo Rodriguez (C) each received a call to the big club.

The move comes as the Grizzlies (35-29) prepare to open a three-game homestand against first-place Sacramento (35-28), who is just a half-game in front of the Grizzlies for the Pacific Coast League's Pacific South Division lead. With a win today, the Grizzlies will move into first place for the first time since April 15 when they held a record of 7-4.

Fresno has won eight of their last 10 games, and has won four of their last five after taking 3 out of 4 in their series win at Las Vegas. The Grizzlies are also tied for second in the PCL in hitting with a .293 batting average and are leading the league in ERA with a 3.71 mark.

Before going to San Francisco, Ortmeier batted .268 with 5 home runs and 25 RBIs in 30 games with Fresno. Schierholtz currently ranks fourth in the PCL in batting average (.347) and is tied for the league lead in hits with 77.
