WHO: Beavers catchers Luke Carlin and Pete Laforest. Both catchers are fluent in French, with roots in French-speaking Quebec. Carlin spent the majority of his childhood in Aylmer, Quebec, while Laforest hails from Hull, Quebec. Laforest spoke French while growing up and learned to speak English while attending college in the United States. Carlin was bilingual at an early age, moving to Quebec as a youth. Though both played prominent baseball in their region and despite the fact Aylmer and Hull are roughly 10 miles apart, Carlin and Laforest did not know one another until they became teammates in the San Diego Padres organization in 2006.
