Kannapolis Drops Third Straight to Greensboro

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

Greensboro, NC - The Kannapolis Intimidators held the Greensboro Grasshoppers to single digits in runs and hits and kept them in the ballpark the entire game, but still could not find a way to beat a hot team. Greensboro (34-29) beat Kannapolis (28-35), 4-2, Sunday evening at First Horizon Park. It was the third straight game resulting in an Intimidators loss at the hands of the Grasshoppers.

In a match-up of two tough lefties, Greensboro's Graham Taylor got the better of Kannapolis's Justin Edwards. It was the second time the two southpaws had faced off. Taylor, who threw a complete game in the first match-up, went six innings Sunday, but had an identical stat line: one run allowed on four hits with four strikeouts. Taylor, an All-Star selection earlier in the week, improved to 7-1.

Edwards, who got a no-decision in the first match-up, went six innings as well, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk. In taking the loss, Edwards (4-3) received his first decision in his last six starts.

Greensboro got an unearned run in the first inning when Reymundo Tavares's throw to third in an attempt to catch John Raynor stealing sailed through to left field. Raynor came around to score on the error.

Then, after Lee Cruz tied the game up with an RBI single in the top of the fourth, the Grasshoppers plated two runs in the bottom half of the inning to re-take the lead.

Greensboro extended the lead to 4-1 in the seventh with another unearned run and Cruz drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. But, Kannapolis stranded five runners in the final three innings, including four of them in scoring position.

Kannapolis got two hits apiece from Brandon Allen and Anderson Gomes. Both extended their hitting streaks, with Allen bumping up to 14 games and Gomes, who also scored both Kannapolis runs, moving up to an 11-game hitting streak.

The Intimidators lost three of four games to the Grasshoppers, allowing 41 runs on 53 hits.

The Greenville Drive will come to Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium Monday to begin a three-game series with the Intimidators. Game time Monday is set for 7:05 pm.
