Win Streak Ends at Nine, 'Birds Fall 10-4 to Lakewood

Kevin Howard had seven RBI on three extra-base hits as the Lakewood BlueClaws snapped Delmarva's nine-game win streak and defeated the Shorebirds 10-4 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Howard's spectacular day started with an RBI double in the top of the first to extend Lakewood's lead to 2-0. Gus Milner followed with a single to score Howard and cap off a three-run first for the BlueClaws.

But both of Howard's biggest hits came with the bases loaded. In the fifth inning, the left-handed batter lined a double to the opposite field, clearing the bases for a 7-0 Lakewood cushion. He added insurance in the ninth inning with another bases-clearing hit-a triple-to give the BlueClaws the 10-4 lead.

The Shorebirds did not give up its winning streak without a fight. Down 7-2 in the seventh, Delmarva led off with three straight hits, including an RBI single by David Cash to cut the lead 7-3. Two batters later, Brandon Snyder singled home Danny Figueroa to cut the deficit to three.

With two outs, Todd Davison walked to lead the bases and put the tying run on base. Billy Rowell came off the bench to pinch hit and lined one up the middle, only for reliever Michael Dubee to knock it down on the mound and throw over to first to end the threat.

Antonio Bastardo went five innings in his first BlueClaws start of the season to pick up the win. He went five innings and gave up two hits and struck out six. Shorebirds starter Jose Maria was knocked around in his four-plus innings, giving up six earned runs on six hits.

Delmarva looks to begin a new winning streak, this time on the road as they head up to Lake County to start a seven-game road trip to end the first half of the season. Pedro Beato starts for Delmarva while Carlton Smith opposes him on the mound for the Captains.
