Howard Drives in Seven in 10-4 Win

June 10, 2007 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

SALSIBURY, MD-Kevin Howard was 3-5 with 7 RBIs leading Lakewood to a 10-4 win on Sunday over Delmarva. The BlueClaws salvage a game out of the weekend series after losing the first 3, and are now 3-4 on their 10-game road trip.

Howard, who had an RBI double as part of a 3-run first inning and a 3-run double as part of a 4-run 5th and for good measure added a 3-run triple in the 9th, has now driven in 22 runs in 27 games since joining Lakewood from Clearwater.

The BlueClaws (30-30), who left 14 runners on base on Saturday, 11 in scoring position, had no such problem on Sunday, striking for 3 first-inning runs against Jose Maria (2-5). Adrian Cardenas drove in a run on a fielder's choice, Howard drove in a run on a double, and Gus Milner followed with a single to bring home Howard.

That was more than enough for Lakewood starter Antonio Bastardo (1-0), who made is Lakewood debut, going 5 innings and allowed 2 runs while striking out 6. Bastardo, a soughpaw, left with a 7-2 lead.

Cardenas drove in a run in the 5th before Maria left without getting an out in the frame. Howard then cleared the bases with a double against reliever Josh Tamba.

Delmarva (30-30) had their best chance in the 7th, scoring twice against Alex Concepcion to make it 7-4 and loading the bases with 2 outs. Billy Rowell, the #9 pick in the 2006 draft, came up to pinch-hit as the go- ahead run, and hit a line drive off the palm of the glove of pitcher Michael Dubee, facing his first batter, but Dubee recovered to throw out Rowell at first.

Howard's 3 run triple in the 9th came off of Luis Lebron, who walked the first 4 batters he faced, though one was erased on a caught-stealing. RJ Swindle tossed the 9th for Lakewood after Dubee retired all 4 he faced.

Lakewood now heads back to Hagerstown, where they won 2 of 3 to open this, for 3 more to wrap it up. RHP Carlos Monasterios (6-4, 5.08) throws for Lakewood and is opposed by LHP Cory VanAllen (0-3, 4.15). First pitch is at 7:05 and the pre-game begins at 6:50 on the Shore Sports Network (1160 WOBM-AM and 1310 WADB).

NOTES: Before the game, Lakewood added SS Fidel Hernandez to the roster. Hernandez, who hit .250 for the BlueClaws last year, comes from high-A Clearwater, where he was batting .247. Also, Sunday's starter, Antonio Bastardo, was brought up from Extended Spring Training. The BlueClaws only had 24 players on their roster, and thus only had to make 1 roster move, and they placed RHP Kevin Salmon on the disabled-list with a broken thumb.
