Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Carolina League officially released the roster for the 2007 All-Star Team and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans will be represented in the Carolina League vs. California League All-Star Game on June 19th at Banner Island Park in Stockton, California, by right-handed starting pitcher Moises Hernandez. Hernandez, the older brother of Seattle Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez, has posted a sparkling 9-2 record with a 3.09 ERA in 12 starts with the Pelicans this season. His nine wins this season are the most in the Carolina League and tie for the most in Minor League Baseball.

"This is an outstanding honor for Moises," said Pelicans Manager Rocket Wheeler via telephone from Kinston, North Carolina. "He's so deserving of a spot on the Carolina League All-Star team because he's done such a great job for us this year."

Hernandez, a 23-year-old hurler from Valencia, Venezuela, has become the ace of the Pelicans pitching staff this season. He enters this weekend having earned a win in six consecutive starts which ties Dan Curtis, Kyle Davies, and Christian Parra for second in the Pelicans record book in terms of most consecutive wins (Trey Hodges holds the record of nine straight wins from May 5th - June 16th of 2001). Hernandez has tossed more innings (75.2) than any other pitcher in the Carolina League this season and his 3.09 ERA ranks as the sixth best in the league.

Hernandez was originally signed by the Baltimore Orioles in 2001, but was sent to the Atlanta Braves as compensation for Pitching Coach Leo Mazzone leaving the Braves to join the Orioles prior to the start of the 2006 season. Moises began last season in Rome where he made 10 relief appearances and one start before receiving a promotion to Myrtle Beach on May 24th where he's been ever since. He finished last year with a 2-4 record and a 4.76 ERA with 10 saves for the Pelicans.

The Pelicans lone All-Star is slated to make his next start this Sunday at Grainger Stadium in Kinston, North Carolina, against the first-place Kinston Indians. The Pelicans continue a four-game series against the K-Tribe tonight at 7:00 p.m.

In May, the Pelicans announced that the The 2008 Carolina League vs. California League All-Star Game will be played at Coastal Federal Field in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The mid-summer classic, which features the top talent in Class-A baseball, will be held June 24, 2008.

Following their four-game road trip the Pelicans will head back to Myrtle Beach on Tuesday, June 12 when they kick off a six-game home stand starting with a three-game series against the Salem Avalanche at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 843-918-6000 or toll free at 877-918-TIXX (8499).
