Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Coming off a long eight-game road trip, the Drive (20-31) looked as if they were suffering from jet-lag Tuesday night, as they fell 13-3 in their first meeting of the year with the Hickory Crawdads (21-28).
The Drive's hit parade carried over from the road trip, pounding out 12 hits, unfortunately it did not equal runs. Trailing 4-0 in the third, Greenville mounted a comeback. With a run already on the board due to an RBI-double by Chih-Hsien Chiang, Jason Place crushed a first pitch offering from Henry Cabrera for his team-leading fifth homer of the season.
The former Wren High standout turned in one of his most productive games of the season, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish. Chiang, Manny Arambarris, Josh Reddick, and Carlos Fernandez also chipped in with two hits apiece in the loss.
Hickory would increase their lead and would not look back, as they scored nine runs over the final four innings. Starter Brian Steinocher (2-6) was tagged for two runs in the top of the sixth before Adam Blackley was summoned from the bullpen.
Things did not bode any better for Blackley as he surrendered five runs, four earned, in 1.2 innings of work, including a solo shot by Jonel Pacheco. Bobby Kingsbury added a two-run homer in the eighth inning off Felix Ventura.
Henry Cabrera, a member of the 2005 Greenville Bombers, evened his record to 3-3 for the Crawdads, allowing three runs in 5.0 innings of work. The right-hander gave up eight hits while striking out two. Charles Benoit and Olivo Astacio combined for 4.0 shutout innings in relief.
The Drive and Crawdads continue their four-game series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for 12:05 PM, the Drive's second Businessperson Special of the season. Shoe shines will be available on the concourse, as well as haircuts by Hob Knob Hair Designs.
Right-hander Chris Jones will take the mound for the Drive, as the Crawdads counter with right-hander Jared Hughes. The Drive are home for an eight-game home stand, which runs through Tuesday, June 5th. Tickets for all home games can be purchased by visiting www.GreenvilleDrive.com, or by calling (864) 240-4500.
NOTES: The three-hit game by Place was his first of the 2007 season...Earlier in the day, OF Reid Engel was placed on the DL...OF Matt Sheely was recalled from the Lowell Spinners to fill the roster spot
