Braves Top Gnats, 7-2

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Savannah (13-38) started its nine-game homestand on the wrong foot with a 7-2 loss to the Rome Braves (19-32) Tuesday night. Greg Mullens (3-2) took the loss while Braves starter Jeff Lyman (1-6) matched a career-high as he pitched 7.0 innings to earn his first win of the season.

Trailing 5-2 the Gnats sent third baseman Leivi Ventura to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning. The team leader in RBI represented the go-ahead run but grounded out to first base to end the inning. Rome rallied for two additional insurance runs in the top of the ninth, and the Gnats went in order in the bottom of the ninth.

After Greg Mullens gave up an unearned run in the first inning, The Gnats responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead when Leivi Ventura doubled home Hector Pellot and Josh Thole.

Braves catcher Phillip Britton led off the second inning with a home run to tie the game. Rome added two more runs in the sixth when Mullens gave up a single to the first three batters of the inning and reliever Julio Polanco allowed two of them to score.

Right fielder Brahiam Maldonado joined Ventura as one of the lone bright spots for Savannah has he went 2-for-3 with a double.
