Hagerstown Suns News Release
(Hagerstown, MD May 29, 2007) - It's been a powerful start to the 2007 season for the Hagerstown Suns as they are on track to shatter team records in several power categories. The middle of the Suns lineup has provided a boost early this season, with sluggers Justin Maxwell and Chris Marrero leading the charge.
Maxwell, a Bethesda native, has come on strong in the last few weeks, connecting on seven of his eleven home runs in the month of May. Maxwell has thrived over his last twenty games, driving in 15 RBI and earning the SAL Hitter of the Week Award for May 7th-May 14th.
Suns left fielder Chris Marrero has hit well since the start of 2007. The 18-year-old was drafted in the first round in 2006 and has lived up to lofty expectations. He has twelve home runs. Eleven of his home runs came in a stellar month at the plate in May. At home, Marrero has batted an impressive .391 with nine homers and 30 RBI. Marrero was named the SAL Hitter of the Week for May 14th - 20th.
The team record for home runs in a season is 31 which was set by Matt Tyner in 1981 and matched by Ken Gerhart in 1983. The South Atlantic League record was set by former major leaguer Russell Branyan who hit 40 in 1996.
Maxwell and Marrero both are on pace to break the team record for home runs in a season. Their impressive power numbers have propelled the Suns to climb up four spots in the standings over the last month. Hagerstown leads the league in home runs with 55 and should challenge the team record of 158, which was set back in 1983.
The Suns have been especially impressive at home, hitting 33 of their 55 home runs at Municipal Stadium. They are only four homers shy of tying the total for all of last season at home.
