Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (May 18, 2007) - The South Bend Silver Hawks (18-20) slugged four home runs and six extra-base hits in a 15-6 victory over the Burlington Bees (16-22) at Community Field this afternoon. This was the most runs allowed in a game this season by the Bees and the team's most lopsided loss. The series is now even at a game apiece.

South Bend jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the top of the second inning. Brad Miller led off with a single and scored on a double by Justin Brashear. After two flyouts, Brashear went to third on a passed ball. Bees' starter Mario Santiago then walked Shea McFeely and Manuel Ferrar reached on a fielding error by Jeff Bianchi at shortstop as Brashear scored to make it 2-0. Daniel Perales then followed with a three-run homer to right that capped the scoring. Only one of the five runs was earned against Santiago. In the top of the third, Brashear belted a solo home run to right that extended the Silver Hawks' lead to 6-0 before the Bees got on the board in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Alvi Morel, Derrick Robinson, and Chris McConnell all singled to load the bases against South Bend starter Jordan Noberto and Bianchi brought in Morel with a sacrifice fly to center.

In the top of the fourth, Ferrar hit South Bend's third home run off of Santiago (1-3) to extend the South Bend lead to 7-1. Santiago then hit Perales with a pitch and after the two exchanged words, both benches were warned. There was no further incident as Santiago came out after walking the next batter. Matt Campbell took over and got a double play to end the inning.

It was still 7-1 going to the bottom of the sixth inning when South Bend went to the bullpen and the Bees mounted a rally against Chase Christianson. With two outs and a man on first, Joe Dickerson walked and Kurt Mertins singled to drive in one run. Brady Everett then belted a three-run homer to left that cleared the bases and got the Bees to within two at 7-5. Mark Romanczuk replaced Christianson and got a groundout to end the inning.

The Bees didn't stay close for long as South Bend rallied in the seventh to pull away. With one out, South Bend had the bases loaded after an intentional walk to Brashear, and the Bees brought in Chris Hayes from the bullpen. Hayes walked Steve Mena to force in a run and then three straight bloop singles from Yunesky Sanchez, McFeely, and Ferrar, each drove in a run and extended the Silver Hawks' lead to 11-5. Perales got an RBI on a slow bounceout to first and Joey Side singled to drive in a run and cap the six-run rally that left South Bend with a 13-5 lead. The first three runs were charged to Campbell while the rest went to Hayes who also allowed a two-run homer to Sanchez in the eighth to complete the South Bend scoring.

The Bees got one final run against Romanczuk in the eighth. Michael Thompson doubled and after Dickerson drew his third walk of the game, scored on a double by Mertins. Romanczuk finished the eighth and Craig Pfautz finished with a scoreless ninth.
