Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Tucson, AZ - Oklahoma LF Marlon Byrd hit a grand slam in the third inning to lift the RedHawks to a 7-3 victory in front of 3,534 fans on Saturday night at Tucson Electric Park.

Tucson scored first in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI ground out by CF Jeff Salazar. Sidewinders SS Danny Richar, who singled to start the inning, scored on the play.

The RedHawks then went on a tear in the bottom of the third, starting the inning with two straight walks from Sidewinders RHP Dustin Nippert. After CF Freddy Guzman bunted into a 2-5 fielder's choice, Nippert walked another batter, and was replaced by RHP Adam Bass with the bases loaded.

On a 1-0 count, Byrd sent Bass' second pitch of the game sailing over the right field wall for a grand slam. It was Byrd's fourth homer of the season, and gave him 22 RBI on the year. After Byrd's long ball, Bass allowed three straight baserunners to reach base on two singles and a hit-by-pitch. One more run scored in the inning, giving the RedHawks a 5-1 advantage.

RHP Casey Daigle entered the game in the seventh inning and gave up two runs on a two RBI single by Oklahoma 1B Nate Gold, scoring Byrd and RF Kevin Mahar.

The Sidewinders were unable to mount a late comeback, scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth but stranding C Matt Morgan on second to end the game. Tucson dropped to 16-19 on the season.

The Sidewinders will face the RedHawks for the second game of the series tomorrow night. First pitch is at 6:00 PM. RHP Yusmeiro Petit (2-3, 7.20) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Left-hander John Koronka (3-2, 4.64) will start for Oklahoma. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 5:45 p.m.
