McNeill Signs with Washington Capitals

The NHL Washington Capitals have announced today that Spirit defenseman Patrick McNeill has signed an entry-level contract. McNeill was drafted by the Capitals in the fourth round, 118th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. The Strathroy, Ontario native is expected to sign an amateur tryout agreement with the Hershey Bears, Washington's AHL affiliate, for the remainder of the season. The terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"We're thrilled for Patrick and his entire family," stated Spirit President and Managing Partner Craig Goslin, "We're proud of the fact that his development into an NHL'er occurred here in Saginaw. He will be a huge asset to the Capitals and we wish him all the best."

McNeill was drafted first overall by the Spirit in the 2003 OHL Priority Selection. The high scoring defenseman tallied 53 goals and 129 assists (182 points) in four seasons with the Spirit. McNeill won a gold medal in the 2004 World U-17 Challenge and the 2004 World Junior Cup. He also participated in the 2006 ADT Challenge and the 2007 Team Canada World Junior's Selection Camp. McNeill played in the 2006 OHL All-Star Classic and was named to the Western Conference roster for the 2007 OHL All-Star Classic; he was unable to play in the 2007 Classic due to injury. He served as the Spirit's captain for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.
