Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Fresno, CA - Fred Lewis drilled a two out, bases loaded single to centerfield in the bottom of the 14th inning to lift the Fresno Grizzlies to a 5-4 win over the Tucson Sidewinders on Tuesday night at Chukchansi Park. The loss drops Tucson back to the .500 mark at 9-9.
Fresno held a 3-2 lead going to the top of the ninth inning but the Sidewinders rallied for a pair of runs to take a 4-3 lead. Danny Richar had a single to left-center to tie the game and Jeff Salazar reached on a fielder's choice that scored Dee Brown and put Tucson in front.
The Grizzlies tied the game in a wild bottom of the ninth. Chad Harville, who was a perfect 5-5 in save opportunities and who had not allowed a run or a hit in his previous work, gave up a leadoff single to pinch hitter Clay Timpner and a double to Kevin Frandsen. Luis Figueroa hit a comebacker to Harville who trapped Timpner in a rundown. Brian Barden tagged out Timpner and then threw to Donnie Sadler who tagged out Figueroa as he ran to second base which was already occupied by Frandsen. Nate Schierholtz picked up his teammates however with a bloop single to left that tied the game at 4.
Tucson used seven pitchers in the contest as their bullpen had to fill a void in the rotation created by the promotions of Dana Eveland and Yusmeiro Petit to the Diamondbacks. Casey Daigle made his first start since 2005 and worked the first three innings. Randy Choate gave up two runs in his 2 1/3 innings while Jailen Peguero, Bill Murphy and Mike Schultz all tossed shutout baseball.
Adam Bass (0-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up Lewis' base hit in the 14th. Frandsen led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second. Schierholtz reached on an error by Jamie D'Antona and Dan Ortmeier was intentionally walked to load the bases. Justin Leone grounded into a fielder's choice that forced Frandsen at the plate before Lewis hit a 3-2 fastball over the head of Rich Thompson to the warning track in centerfield.
Billy Sadler was credited with the win. Sadler (2-0) worked a perfect top of the 14th with two strikeouts.
The Sidewinders had just two base runners in extra innings. They had runners at the corners with two outs in the 11th but Brian Barden struck out to end the inning. The Sidewinders were retired in order in the 10th, 12th, 13th and 14th.
Rich Thompson led the Sidewinders offense with four hits. Jeff Salazar went 2-6 with a RBI. Jamie D'Antona went 1-6 to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 18 consecutive games.
Brian Barden and Donnie Sadler both played outstanding defense but struggled at the plate. Barden was 0-7 and Sadler 0-6.
Kevin Frandsen went 4-6 for Fresno. Nate Schierholtz went 4-7. Lewis was 2-7 with 2 RBI.
The Sidewinders have their first scheduled off day on Wednesday and will return to action Thursday night against the Portland Beavers at Tucson Electric Park. Left-hander Evan MacLane (1-1, 7.07) will start for Tucson against right-hander Mike Thompson (0-0, 22.50) for Portland. First pitch is at 6:30. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:15.
