Indianapolis Indians News Release

NORFOLK, Va. -- Right fielder Chris Aguila blasted a three-run homer in the top of the 11th to give Indianapolis a 5-2 victory over Norfolk Monday evening at Harbor Park. The Indians improve to 6-3 with the win, while the Tides fall to 3-5 on the season.

Indianapolis scored all three runs in the 11th on Aguila's first long ball and second game-winning hit of 2007. 1B Jose Hernandez drew a lead-off walk and 3B Russ Johnson smashed a double to right before Aguila launched an 0-1 pitch over the left-field wall.

Indians RHP Franquelis Osoria (1.0 IP) handled things from there, slamming the door in the home half of the 11th for his first save of the campaign.

The Tribe rally gave RHP Jim Brower (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 SO) the win after a save opportunity got away in the ninth. Tides RHP Francis Beltran (1.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB) was pinned with the loss in his first decison of the year.

Neither starter -- Indianapolis RHP John Van Benschoten (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) or Norfolk RHP Jon Leicester (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) -- figured in the decision.

The Tides jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first. SS Brandon Fahey walked, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a fielding error.

The Indians responded with a pair of scores in the second. CF Nyjer Morgan brought DH Luis Matos and SS Brian Bixler plateward with a single to center. Matos drew a lead-off walk and Bixler was hit by a pitch.

Defense and pitching took over until the ninth when Norfolk RF Luis Montanez singled to center and came around to score on PH Morgan Clendenin's double to left.

Morgan and C Ryan Doumit recorded two hits apiece for the Indians, while Montanez and 1B Mike Cervenak managed two base knocks each for the Tides.

The two teams return to Harbor Park on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m., for game two of the series. RHP Marty McLeary is expected to take the hill for Indianapolis, while RHP Tim Kester is scheduled to start for Norfolk.

The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:55 p.m.
