Braves Freeze Bats

Gwinnett Stripers News Release

Richmond, VA -The Richmond Braves beat the Louisville Bats 4-1 Monday at The Diamond. Four Braves pitchers combined to allow just three hits as the Braves won for the fifth time in seven games.

The cold and windy weather combined with strong starting pitching to squelch any early offense. Bats starting pitcher Mike Gosling dueled with the Braves Kevin Barry for the first four innings but Barry bested Gosling, striking out eight Louisville batters in five innings to Gosling's five Richmond batters in four innings. The Bats were able to capitalize on small ball in the top of the third. Barry allowed his only walk of the game in the third inning, when Louisville's Ron Jorgensen opened with a base-on-balls. With one out, Gosling bunted Jorgensen to second to setup the first run of the game. Norris Hopper dropped a 1-1 pitch into shallow centerfield, scoring Jorgensen.

In the sixth, the Braves' Barbaro Canizares recorded his first hit at the Triple-A level to start the comeback. After starting the season 0-14, Canizares laced a one-out single into leftfield. Gregor Blanco walked to make it first and second with one out. Bill McCarthy sliced home the deciding runs with a two-out triple. McCarthy, who leads the International League with a .533 batting average, later scored on Willie Harris double. Harris capped the four run rally by scoring on a wild pitch.

Macay McBride picked up the win. Paul Bush allowed just one hit in two innings and Manny Acosta closed out the game for his first save of the season. Brian Shackelford took the loss.

Richmond and Louisville return to The Diamond for the second game of the series, tomorrow night. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Braves will start RHP Anthony Lerew against Bats LHP Bobby Livingston.

The Braves homestand continues through Thursday. Ticket packages and single game tickets are on sale now. For more information please call 359-4444 or visit on line at www.rbraves.com.
