Stampede take Key Bank reading timeouts

February 27, 2007 - NBA G League (G League)
Idaho Stampede News Release

BOISE, Idaho (February 27, 2007) - The Idaho Stampede professional basketball franchise recently visited Maxine Johnson Elementary school in Parma, ID to celebrate a love of reading with students, in conjunction with the NBA D-League and Stampede's Read to Achieve program, presented by Key Bank.

Seven players and assistant coach Ray Lopes visited with three classrooms, reading short stories and taking questions from students about life, basketball and the importance of reading. The visit finished with a flurry of autographs and smiles.

To kickoff Read to Achieve Month in March, the Stampede will also visit Hubbard Elementary School in Kuna, ID on Tuesday, February 27 and Shadow Hills Elementary School in Boise on Friday, March 2. The team will address the importance of taking time out of each day to read with family members with students at each school. March 2 is Dr. Seuss' birthday.

The centerpiece of the D-League's community relations platform is the Read to Achieve initiative. As in the NBA and WNBA, Read to Achieve works to promote a lifelong love of reading and online literacy and to encourage families and adults to read regularly with young children.

The D-League currently includes the Albuquerque Thunderbirds (N.M.), Anaheim Arsenal (Calif.), Arkansas RimRockers (Little Rock), Austin Toros (Texas), Bakersfield Jam (Calif.), Colorado 14ers (Broomfield), Dakota Wizards (Bismarck, N.D.), Fort Worth Flyers (Texas), Idaho Stampede (Boise), Los Angeles D-Fenders (Calif.), Sioux Falls Skyforce (S.D.) and Tulsa 66ers (Okla.).

The D-League continues to develop talent from across all disciplines for the NBA's 30 teams and the entire NBA umbrella. In addition to the assignment of 20 NBA players to D-League affiliates this season, there have also been 11 GATORADE Call-Ups from the D-League to the NBA. Additionally, every referee hired by the NBA since 2002 has worked in the D-League, while coaches, athletic trainers and front office executives are also being developed.

Designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally, the D-League also offers fun, family entertainment at affordable prices. For additional information on the NBA Development League, visit D-LEAGUE.com.
