Manager Mako Oliveras Leads All New B-Mets Coaching Staff

The New York Mets have announced that Mako Oliveras (pronounced MA-ko oh-lee-VER-as) will manage the Binghamton Mets in 2007. He will be joined by pitching coach Ricky Bones and hitting coach Nelson Silverio.

The 2007 season will be the 22nd consecutive campaign as a professional coach or manager for the 60-year-old Oliveras, who spent the last two seasons as the hitting coach for the Montgomery (AL) Biscuits, Tampa Bay's Double-A affiliate in the Southern League. That two-year stint capped an eight-year stay in the Devil Rays' system for Oliveras, who last managed in 2004, when he skippered the Bakersfield Blaze of the High-A California League. The Bayamon, Puerto Rico native also has four seasons of Major League coaching experience, serving as a bench coach for the Chicago Cubs (1995-1996) and California Angels (1994). Oliveras was also the Cubs' first-base coach in 1997.

Oliveras has a 763-760 record in 11 full seasons as a minor league manager in the Devil Rays, Indians and Angels organizations, with eight of those seasons coming at the Double-A or Triple-A levels. He's currently managing the Caguas Criollos of the Puerto Rican Winter League.

Bones (pronounced BO-nus) will be spending his second season in the Mets' organization. Last season, he was the pitching coach for the High-A St. Lucie Mets, who finished with the second-lowest ERA in the Florida State League en route to winning the championship. The Guayama, Puerto Rico native, who will turn 38 two days after the B-Mets open their season, previously served as a pitching coach in the Washington/Montreal organization, working at High-A Potomac (VA) in 2005 and Low-A Savannah (GA) in 2004. A righthanded pitcher, Bones compiled a 63-82 record and 4.85 ERA in 11 Major League seasons with San Diego, Milwaukee, the Yankees, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Baltimore and Florida from 1991-2001. He was named to the 1994 American League All-Star team while with the Brewers.

The 42-year-old Silverio was St. Lucie's hitting coach last season after splitting time as a hitting coach between St. Lucie and the Rookie Gulf Coast League Mets in 2005. Silverio was also the NY Mets' bullpen catcher for two seasons. The Santiago, Dominican Republic native toiled for nine seasons as a Minor League catcher in the Oakland and San Diego systems from 1985-1993. Silverio's dad, Tom, made it to the Majors with the California Angels for 31 games from 1970-1972.

The Binghamton Mets begin their 16th Eastern League season on April 5th against the Akron Aeros in Akron, OH. The B-Mets will play their 2007 home opener on April 12th at 6:35 p.m. at NYSEG Stadium against the Portland Sea Dogs.
