Bourque, Giroux lead Bears past Monarchs
November 25, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release
HERSHEY came out of the blocks flying, and used a quick burst of offense as the driving force behind a 5-4 win at GIANT Center Saturday night.
The BEARS came out quickly in the first period with three goals, and a dominating performance. Chris Bourque began the game with an unassisted goal after a Manchester turnover at 1:39 of period one. HERSHEY would increase its lead to 2-0 when Alexandre Giroux scored a short-handed goal at 2:32. Dave Steckel would round out the scoring with his fourth goal of the season at the 8:22 mark. After three goals on the first 10 shots, starting goaltender Jason LaBarbera was benched in favor of backup netminder Barry Brust. Brust would hold the BEARS scoreless the rest of the first period, and HERSHEY took a 3-0 lead into intermission.
The teams would trade goals in the second period, with each club scoring twice. Shay Stephenson put Manchester on the board with a rocket into the top right corner of the net at 7:20 of the second. Matt Koalska would answer for HERSHEY with his third goal of the season at 10:42. After Gabe Gauthier scored for Manchester at 11:52, Giroux would put home his second of the game and his 12th goal of the season. The Monarchs outshot HERSHEY 12-11 in the period, but the BEARS would take a 5-2 lead into the third period. The Monarchs would strike for two late in the game from Petr Kanko and Patrick O'Sullivan, but the BEARS would hang on for the team's third straight victory.
Notes: With two goals, Giroux now leads the team in goals with 12. Koalska's goal was his second in as many games. The win for Daigneault was his fifth straight win to begin the season. The BEARS and the Rochester Americans are the only teams in the AHL this season that have not allowed a short-handed goal. Eric Fehr, Brooks Laich and Kris Beech were linemates Saturday night for the Washington Capitals against the New York Islanders.
