Midfielder Justin Mapp earns first nod to RadioShack MLS Best XI squad

Major League Soccer named the RadioShack Best XI team for the 2006 MLS season during the MLS Gala Awards event held last Saturday at the Frisco Convention Center, and Chicago Fire midfielder Justin Mapp earned his first nod to the League's top squad as one of the team's five midfielder selections. In already his fifth season in MLS, the 22-year-old Mapp enjoyed a true breakout campaign, registering two goals and a career-high eight assists while patrolling both flanks in the first half of the season and occupying the playmaking role during the Fire's red-hot second half of 2006. Mapp, who became the youngest player in MLS history to see action in 100 League matches in September, was part of a true youth movement on this year's RadioShack Best XI, as the Mississippi native was the youngest of six players age 25 or under named to the squad. Mapp's appointment to the season-ending list - which was determined by voting from the MLS players, MLS coaches and general managers, and media - was the first for a member of the "Men in Red" since the team's 2003 campaign, after which four members of the Fire (Chris Armas, DaMarcus Beasley, Carlos Bocanegra and Ante Razov) were named to the Best XI squad.

Let's make a deal? One-day trade window open today in advance of Friday's 2006 MLS Expansion Draft

With the 2006 season now in the books following Houston Dynamo's win in yesterday's MLS Cup, Major League Soccer will turn its focus to the 2007 campaign beginning today, as the League has opened up a one-day trade window that will remain open until 4:00 p.m. CT this afternoon, when rosters for all MLS sides will once again be frozen. Today's trade window comes in advance of another important day for player personal decision makers tomorrow, which is when the 12 current MLS sides must submit their protected player rosters in advance of this Friday's 2006 MLS Expansion Draft. Teams will be allowed to protect 11 players from their 28-man rosters (Senior and Developmental rosters combined), with Generation adidas players automatically protected. Each team may only leave one senior international player unprotected. The League's 13th team, Toronto FC, will begin the true building of its roster for their inaugural 2007 campaign this Friday, Nov. 17 during the 2006 MLS Expansion Draft, with the results of the club's selections set to be announced at 12:00 p.m. CT. The Canadian side will be allowed to chose up to 10 players in the draft, but can only chose one player from each existing MLS squad.
