Chiefs stay hot at home

November 12, 2006 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release

The Spokane Chiefs won their fourth straight home game with goals by Mitch Wahl, Corey Courchene and Chris Bruton in a 3-2 victory over the Tri-City Americans. The win was the first for Spokane in four games this year versus the Americans and pushed the Chiefs record to 10-9-3-0 and brought them to within one point of Tri-City in second place.

Wahl's goal just 1:44 into the game was his sixth of the season. The 16-year-old stole the puck at the Tri-City blueline, dragged it into the slot and after his initial shot was stopped, swatted the puck out of midair into the back of the net. The goal went unassisted.

The Americans leading scorer, Colton Yellow Horn, struck on the power play at 6:37 of the opening period and tied it at one. Yellow Horn's one-timer from the circle picked the short side of Dustin Tokarski and beat him stick side.

The game remained tied at one until the Chiefs scored their lone power play goal of the night with 1:33 remaining in the second. Courchene won a race to the puck in the crease and tallied for the second time this year. A stretched out Carey Price couldn't cover the puck with his glove hand and the 20-year- old put the Chiefs up going into the third.

Spokane got an insurance goal with less than three minutes left in the game when skating shorthanded. Seth Compton's pass on a two-on-one to Bruton jumped over a defender's stick and onto his tape. The 19-year-old backhanded it past Price for the eventual game winning goal.

The Americans, with Price on the bench, scored with less than a minute left to pull back within one, but couldn't get the equalizer.

Tri-City outshot Spokane 27-26 and each team scored once on the power play. The Chiefs were 1-8 and the Americans, 1-9.

Spokane will be off until Friday when they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the third of five straight home games. Saturday, the Chiefs will host Kamloops.

Tickets to all home games are available by calling the Chiefs office at (509) 535-PUCK or TicketsWest at (800) 325-SEAT.
