Meet the Rays of Training Camp

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - With the preseason match-ups just a few days away, the South Carolina Stingrays want to introduce the players in training camp to all the fans. There are 24 players participating in camp this season, with eight players returning from last season's team. They are listed below along with their jersey numbers.

7 Josh Anderson (RW) - This is Anderson's second year of professional hockey after he played with the Lubbock Cotton Kings of the CHL last season. He played 55 games with them last season scoring 13 goals with 12 assists for 25 points.

9 Chris Kovalcik (LW) - Last season Kovalcik split his time between three teams of the SPHL. He had three points with the Pee Dee Cyclones in eight games, 29 points (12g, 17a) in 29 games with the Jacksonville Barracudas, and had six points in seven games with the Knoxville Ice Bears.

11 Ryan Bennett (RW) - Bennett begins his third year of professional hockey. Last season Bennett played in 57 games with the Adirondack IceHawks of the UHL and posted 52 points off 24 goals and 28 assists. Bennett has spent time in the AHL with the Rochester Americans during the 2004-05 season and with the Portland Pirates last year.

15 Evan Schwabe (C) - In his rookie year, Schwabe played one game with the Las Vegas Wranglers before being traded to the Stingrays at the beginning of last season. He finished the year with 56 points (23g, 33a) in 60 games.

16 Chris Chaput (C) - Chaput played with the Elmira Jackals last season with fellow training camp player Konkle. He was named to the 2006 UHL All-Star Classic in his rookie year after leading the team in points with 66 points (26g, 40a) in 70 games. Chaput has played in the ECHL once before in a brief four-game stint with the Trenton Titans after graduation.

17 Cail MacLean (RW) - MacLean takes on captain duties this year as he returns for his second season with the Rays. Last year, MacLean had 33 points (17g, 16a) for the Rays. He is a tenth year pro.

18 Mark Prentice (C) - Prentice played last year in the OHL with the Oshawa Generals scoring eight points (3g, 5a) in 42 games. He has also spent time in the OPJHL over the last three years with the Lindsay Muskies, Petersborough Bees and the Port Hope Predators. With the Predators, Prentice had 34 points in 38 games as they, helping them to their regular season championship.

19 Jarrett Konkle (F) - Konkle made his professional debut with the Elmira Jackals of the UHL in 2005 after his completion of his senior year at Elmira. He had a stand-out rookie season which included scoring 62 points (37g, 25a) in 72 games and being named to the 2006 UHL All-Star Classic. Konkle's 37 goals lead the team and set a new franchise record for most goals scored in one season.

20 Bryson Busniuk (C) - Busniuk is a name familiar to hockey. Both Busniuk's father and uncle played in the NHL. Bryson will be beginning his fourth year of professional hockey. Last season he played with the Pensacola Ice Pilots of the ECHL where he had 24 points (9g, 15a) in 61 games with 69 penalty minutes.

21 Brendan Bernakevitch (F) - This will be Bernakevitch's second year of professional hockey. He played four years of college hockey at Harvard before playing with the Manchester Monarchs and the Houston Aeros last season where he had 19 points between the two teams.

22 Peter Szabo (LW) - Szabo played four years of college hockey at St. Cloud State in St. Cloud, Minn. before joining the Motor City Mechanics of the UHL last season. With the Mechanics, Szabo put up 78 points (23g, 55a) in 72 games. He was fourth in scoring in the UHL for rookies and had the most assists in the UHL for rookies.

25 Cam McCaffrey (RW)- McCaffrey will be beginning his third season with the Rays. Last season, he played 65 games with the Rays earning 19 points (10g, 9a) with 190 penalty minutes. He also played three games with the Hershey Bears of the AHL.

26 Matt Reid (LW) - Fan favorite Reid is back again this season for his third with the team. Reid was the second-leading scorer last season with 54 points (24g, 30a) in 51 games.

2 Donny Grover (D) - Grover graduated from Northeastern University in 2004 and in the same year played six games for the Quad City Mallards of the UHL. Grover split his time last season between the Danbury Trashers of the UHL and the Lowell Lock Monster of the AHL scoring 42 points between the two teams.

3 T.J. McElroy - (D) - McElroy is making his professional debut this season after four years at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn. Prior to college, McElroy played for the Lincoln Stars of the USHL.

4 Jamie Fraser (D) - Fraser made his professional debut when he joined the Stingrays during the playoff push last season. Prior to the Stingrays, Fraser played most of last season with the Sarnia Sting of the OHL. Fraser scored 16 goals with 26 assists for 42 points in 65 games with the Sting and added two goals and one assist for three points in nine games with the Rays.

5 Nate Kiser (D) - Kiser brings strength to the Stingrays' defense as he joins the team for his third season. He racked up 174 penalty minutes last year in only 61 games with the Rays. Kiser is a fourth year pro.

6 Tim Judy (D) - Judy has prior experience in the ECHL. He joined the Trenton Titans during their 2004-2005 season and playoff run as they went on the win the Kelly Cup Championship. He had three points in eight games during the regular season and four points in 20 games during the playoffs.

8 Viktor Dovgan (D) - Dovgan was a seventh round draft pick of the Washington Capitals in the 2005 NHL entry draft. He comes to the United States from Russia where he has played hockey since 2003. Last season Dovgan played in eight games in the Vysshaya Liga league with the CSK WS Samara scoring three points (1g, 2a).

28 Marc Busenburg (D) - Busenburg will begin his sixth year of professional hockey this year. He has spent his career primarily in the AHL, including two years with the Hershey Bears. Last season, Busenburg played overseas in Germany.

37 Jeff Moor (D) - Moor played last year with the Own Sound Attack of the OHL. He scored nine points (3g, 6a) in 53 games and had 98 penalty minutes. Prior to the OHL, Moor spent two seasons in the OPJHL with the Coburg Cougars and the Stouffville Spirit.

45 Scott Romfo (D) - Romfo returns to the Stingrays after playing 16 games with the team last season earning eight points off one goal and seven assists. He added another two goals in five games during the playoffs.

30 Daren Machesney (G) - Machesney was a fifth round draft pick of the Washington Capitals in the 2005 NHL entry draft. He has played the last three years with the Brampton Battalion of the OHL. Last season he finished with a 3.03 goals-against-average and a .908 save percentage.

31 Davis Parley (G) - Parley will be back between the pipes for the Rays this year, joining the team for the second year. He finished last season with a 2.88 goals-against-average and a .915 save percentage. Davis was named the RBC Financial Group Saver of the Month in January 2006.

The 14th season of professional hockey in the Low Country kicks off on October 20 as the Rays travel to Gwinnett to face the Gladiators. They return to home ice on October 21 as they play the Columbia Inferno at 7:05 p.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum. Activities start at 4:00 p.m. on the plaza out front and continue all night.
