Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League and the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, today announced that the organization will serve as the eastern region's host for the ECHL's annual On-Ice Officials Training Camp. The three-day event, which runs from Friday, October 6 through Sunday, October 8, will feature three on-ice sessions, including a Royals' intrasquad scrimmage, all of which are open to the public. The ECHL will also hold a public 'Town Hall Meeting' at the Sheraton Reading Hotel (1741 Papermill Road, Wyomissing; 610-376-3811) from 2:30 - 4:00 pm on Sunday (October 8) afternoon, during which top members of the ECHL's officiating department will be available for fans' questions. The camp's full schedule, including times and locations, is set out below. The Reading-based On-Ice Officials Training Camp is one of two being held by the ECHL this season with the other scheduled to kick off on October 13, in Bakersfield, California.

At the Reading camp, after a day of closed session classroom work on Friday, October 6, the officials will hit the ice on Saturday, October 7, from 8 to 9 am, at the Body Zone Sports & Wellness Complex (3103 Papermill Road, Wyomissing; 610-376-2100). On Sunday, October 8, the focus shifts to the Sovereign Center, where the Royals' will play an intrasquad scrimmage, beginning at 10:30 am. The activity then returns to the Body Zone for an afternoon on-ice session (12:00 noon - 1:00 pm). The event concludes on Sunday afternoon with the 'Town Hall' meeting at the Sheraton Reading Hotel, during which the ECHL's Vice President of Hockey Operations, Rod Pasma, Director of Officiating, Gord Broseker, and Officiating Consultant, Bryan Lewis, will be available for questions.

All of the league's referees and a number of linesmen have been invited to the camps, which will be supervised by Pasma, Broseker, who worked as an linesman in the National Hockey League for almost thirty years, and Lewis, who served as the Director of Officiating, as well as an on-ice official, for the NHL. The ECHL's Officiating Supervisors Jim Doyle, Mark Faucette, Jerry Pateman, Mark Rudolph and Ken Wheler are also expected to participate in the event. Also attending the Reading camp will be representatives from the NHL as it continues to work with the ECHL in adopting the new standard of rules enforcement. The NHL has assisted in the development of a video presentation that outlines the new standard of officiating specifically addressing its utilization under the one-man referee system. At the Reading camp, it is also anticipated that the on-ice officials will be addressed by Royals' coach, Karl Taylor, and the head of the team's off-ice officials' crew, Jasin Garner.

"This will be an exciting and challenging year for our officiating department. We want our officials heading into the 2006-07 season with the mindset of 'New Standard, New Vision, New Game,'" said Broseker, who is in his second season with the ECHL. "Having two training camps allows our management team and supervisory staff to bring more of a hands-on approach in educating and preparing our on-ice staff for the upcoming season."

The general manager of the Royals, Gordon Kaye, stated, "the Royals' organization is pleased to serve as the host of this event. The training camp is certainly important for the league's on-ice officials as they prepare for the upcoming season. But it is also important for fans to see how hard the officials in this league work at their craft. Also, the fact that the top brass in the ECHL's officiating department has offered to address the questions and concerns of fans in a town hall-style meeting shows that the league is dedicated to making sure that the most important people in our league, the fans, are properly heard."

Sixteen former ECHL officials will be in the NHL in the 2006-07 season with Chris Ciamaga, Mike Leggo, Wes McCauley, Dean Morton, Dan O'Rourke, Brian Pochmara, Kevin Pollock, Chris Rooney, Justin St. Pierre, Ian Walsh and Dean Warren working as referees and Steve Barton, Brian Mach, Tim Nowak, Jay Sharrers, and Mark Wheler working as linesmen.

Full season tickets and total choice flex plans for the 2006-07 season of Royals' hockey are currently on sale. Individual game tickets for the Royals' regular season are currently on sale for Royals' season ticket holders and will go on sale to the general public on Monday, September 25.
