JackHammers split doubleheader in Edmonton Tuesday

EDMONTON, ALBERTA, CANADA-The Joliet JackHammers split their doubleheader with the Edmonton Cracker-Cats losing game of the doubleheader 9-7 before coming back to win 11-3 in the nightcap at TELUS Field on Tuesday night.

The JackHammers struck first in game one of the doubleheader with three runs against Edmonton starter Quintin Oldenburg. Chad Ehrnsberger (2-3) led off with a single and went to second on a single by Maikel Jova (1-4).

Seth Pietsch (0-3) reached first base on a fielder's choice and Blake Gill (3-3) hit an RBI single to score Ehrnsberger to make it 1-0 Joliet. He eventually scored on a throwing error by Edmonton second baseman Chris Becker. Michael Landry (0-2) reached first base on a fielder's choice and moved up to second base on Becker's error. Landry scored on an error by Edmonton left fielder Terence McClain to make it 3-0 Joliet.

Left-hander Eddie Oropesa gave up six runs on ten hits in four and two-thirds innings. He gave up a two-run home run to Chris Becker (3-4) in the second inning and two runs to the Cracker-Cats in the third inning. He departed the game in the fifth inning in favor of Tommy Boss.

The JackHammers scored four runs in the sixth inning against Oldenburg and Edmonton reliever Scott Richmond. Gill hit a one-out single and moved to second base on a single by Greg Stevens (1-1), who came into the game to pinch-hit for Landry. The JackHammers had runners at first and second with one out.

Mike Goss (1-4) hit an RBI single to score Gill and bring the JackHammers within two runs at 6-4. Lackaff smacked a two-run home run off Scott Richmond to give the JackHammers a 7-6 lead.

Amad Stephens came into the game in the ninth inning and gave up three runs on five hits to suffer the loss (1-4).

In game two, the Cracker-Cats struck first in the bottom of the first inning against Joliet starter Eric Fussell (1-1). Terence McClain (1-4) hit an RBI single to score Ashley Freeman (2-4) to give Edmonton a 1-0 lead.

The JackHammers quickly responded with four runs in the third inning against Edmonton starter Jon deVisser (0-1). Seth Pietsch (2-3) worked a walk and went to second on a double by Greg Stevens (3-3). Stevens moved up to third base on an error by the Cracker-Cats right fielder Benoit Emond. Pietsch scored on the error to make it a 2-0 Joliet lead.

Chris Brown (1-5) hit an RBI double to score Stevens and give the JackHammers a 3-0 lead. The JackHammers tacked on one more run to make it a 4-0 lead.

Joliet pushed across three more runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth to earn a 9-3 lead.

Fusell went four innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. He departed the game in the fifth inning with a 4-2 lead.

Loose Gravel: Tuesday was the second doubleheader of the season played by Joliet. The JackHammers played a doubleheader with Kansas City at Silver Cross Field to complete a suspended game from August 2 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. In game two on Tuesday, Pietsch hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 11-3. It was his second home run as a member of the JackHammers.

The JackHammers wrap up their four-game series Wednesday night in Edmonton. The action kicks off with an 8:05 first pitch. The pre-game show begins at 7:50 with Jon Versteeg on 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com. Derell McCall (5-3, 3.81) gets the ball for Joliet. Mike Henry (4-1, 2.91) starts for Edmonton.
