Brockton Rox News Release

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC - The Brockton Rox and Quebec Capitales battled in a regular season finale which carried a breath of postseason air on Thursday Night at Le Stade Municipal. The Rox looked to tie Quebec for first place in the second half of the season with a victory, and sweep the Capitales for the third time this season. However with the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth, the Capitales took the final lead of the game with 1B Eddie Lantigua drawing a bases loaded walk, and LF Nestor Smith driving in a run with a sacrifice fly. RHP Cristian Mendoza retired the side in order in the ninth to record the save and secure Quebec's sole victory in the three-game series.

Brockton cracked the scoreboard first with an RBI ground out by 1B Francisco Lebron in the opening frame. SS Mike Scanzano, who had three hits on the night for Brockton scored on the play as the Rox took a 1-0 lead. Quebec had the answer in the fourth inning off Rox starter RHP Wayne Lundgren. 2B Dany Scalabrini led off the inning with the Capitales' first hit of the night. The next batter, CF Goefry Tomlinson drove a two-run homerun out of the park and gave Quebec a 2-1 advantage. Brockton tied the game in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by DH Guye Senjem. Again it was Scanzano who scored on the play after he doubled to lead off the inning.

For the Rox, RHP Wayne Lundgren was effective in his first start of the season. He did not figure in the decision and the sole blemish on his final line was the two-run homerun by Tomlinson. Lundgren pitched five innings, allowed four hits and walked one. RHP Joey Baker came on in relief to pitch the sixth inning. He worked a perfect sixth and seventh, but walked two with one out in the eighth and ceded to RHP Kyle George. George gave up a single to the first man he faced, and then walked Lantigua with the bases loaded. George retired the next two men he faced, but Smith drove in a run with his sacrifice fly. The two-run cushion was sufficient for Capitales' closer Cristian Mendoza who recorded his 13th save in 2006. LHP Gabe Ribas notched his eighth win of the year, hurling eight innings and allowing the Rox sole runs on six hits and three walks.

The loss for the Rox was just their first at Le Stade Municipal this season in six games. Brockton finished the regular season series with the Capitales with an impressive 11-3 record, including two series sweeps.

On Friday night, Brockton begins a weekend series with the Worcester Tornadoes as

LHP Rolando Viera (6-5, 2.75 ERA) makes his 14th start of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
