Cape Cod Frenzy News Release

Boston, MA. When the Cape Cod Frenzy's summer league team arrived at the Massachusetts of College of Art for their game against RG2 All Stars Wednesday night, they faced a different team than the RG2 unit they had defeated last week 136-132. Sitting on the opponent's bench, lacing up his sneakers, was Boston Celtics forward Ryan Gomes. While the Frenzy players began their pre-game preparation as if it was just any other game, there was a certain nervous excitement in the air. "I live for opportunities like this," stated Frenzy power forward Rich Pittman. "I can't wait for the game to start."

Other familiar faces too had been added to the RG2 All Stars lineup: 6'11 center Mike Williams played four games for the Boston Frenzy last season and 6'10 F-C Morak Bortz played for the ABA's Buffalo Silverbacks, a divisional foe.

After a quick 5-0 start by the RG2 All Stars, the Cape Cod Frenzy players began to execute with deliberate precision. Frenzy point guard Matt Alosa orchestrated the offense with great efficiency. On fast breaks, Alosa found Pittman or James Hall running the floor. In the half court, he repeatedly set up Scott Hazelton in good scoring position. On the defensive side, the Frenzy were extremely concerned, and rightly so, with Gomes. Each time the Celtics forward got the ball, the Frenzy sent 6'10 centers Ife Anosike and Modibo Diarra to double team him. The strategy paid off in the first half as Gomes was forced to pass out of the double team on several occasions. The Frenzy had jumped out to a 24 point lead at halftime.

The second half featured 6'6 Frenzy forward Rich Pittman matched up "mano to mano" with Gomes. Pittman more than held his own, scoring on a variety of spinning post moves and fast break dunks. But Gomes caught fire and showed by he is considered by many to be a future Celtics star: Gomes rattled off a barrage of three pointers, spinning lay-ups and a power slam to help RG2 cut into the Frenzy lead. But Pittman refused to back down as evidenced by the two players jawing at each other as they ran up and down the court.

The Frenzy's 24 point cushion had been reduced to nine at 105-96 with 6:20 to play. But the Frenzy inserted a big lineup for the last six minutes, going with 6'8 Scott Hazelton at the shooting guard spot along with 6'10 Diarra, 6'10 Anosike and 6'6 Pittman up front. This lineup gave the Frenzy a decided rebounding advantage over RG2, and a trio of shot blockers to challenge Gomes at the defensive end. The mismatch caused problems for RG2 as 6'2 Bilal Abdullah ended up guarding 6'6 Rich Pittman. Two quick layups by Pittman and a short jumper by Alosa extended the Frenzy lead back out to a comfortable margin. Final score. 125-109.

The Frenzy were led by Pittman with 31, Hazelton and Hall with 24, Anosike 14 and Modibo Diarra with 12 and 14 rebounds. RG2 was led by Gomes with 40 and 10 boards, Abdullah with 22 and Mike Williams with 10 points, 20 rebounds and 5 blocks.

The 5-2 Frenzy play either Team Winners or RG2 for the championship game on Sunday at 2pm. For more information, contact Frenzy GM Ian McCarthy at ian@capecodfrenzy.com or visit www.capecodfrenzy.com or www.premieresports.tripod.com or www.abalive.com.
